My experience of watching The Metamorphosis of a Butterfly.
Rather than those fabulous opera house, I would like to talk about a small theater in Beijing where all experimental plays of Meng Jinghui, one of the most famous play director in China. The name of the small theater is beehive. Differ from the name indicates the interior of the theater is not complicated at all. An almost narrow concrete paved stairs led me to the third floor where the play The Metamorphosis of a Butterfly.
The theater has a arena stage with an end stage and aisle around the stage at the back and connected to the exist. When I enter into the theater and walk straight down around 5 meters, my seat was already on my righthand side. From my observation, the seats are leveled, one slightly higher than another, but as whole, the sitting area is not much higher than the stage that is about half meter above the aisle.
Due to the fact that audiences can only watch the play from one side, the staging of the play was not special. The main prop, a sofa, was also many times put in the central point of the stage facing audiences. When actors needed to separate the scene, they occupied different areas of the stage. For example, the heroine sat in a sofa at the upper corner at the left and the center while the hero standing in the very middle of the hall performing. But the defected part of the sitting was that even they were mostly facing me, I was still blocked by the pillar at the side of the stage from time to time. The most impressive performance designed according to the type of stage was that actors once run down to the aisle and went around the whole sitting area, which brought audiences into the scene.
