The common meaning of space in film is geographical space. People use picture, color, sound and other elements to reproduce and express the real world, making three-dimensional reality space into a plane two-dimensional space on the screen. The narrative text cannot exist independently besides a specific cultural category, which means it also relates to society, history, politics, religion, art and other factors. Film is not only about physical space level, but involves social, historical, political and other aspects. Anne Cranny-Francis’ research just provides some new perspectives about space, and the “metaphor” she mentioned interest me a lot.

She mentioned that “science fiction writers used the metaphor of space to explore the culture and social values of their society”. The success of Hollywood lies in taking audio-visual spectacle as the carrier and implanting multi-cultural elements into it. It packages film through culture and carry culture through film, expanding its political, economic and cultural ideas through film. Therefore, its films can not only enter American public, but also make the foreign audience feel the cultural elements of their own nation. Hollywood’s movies make contributions to cultural attributes of geographical space, geographical relationship, national identity identification, and the identification of ethical values, making Hollywood from Hollywood in the United States to Hollywood in the world. In many parts of the world, American popular culture does not even look like an imported thing, but the mainstream culture of the region. From this we can see that the study of space of the film should not only analyze the materiality of the space geometry of the film text, but also regard its spatial relationship as the social relationship. 

Technology has changed the whole world, and digital technology is also triggering the space revolution in the field of film. Virtual reality and reality appear in the same space and has changed the way of film narration. 3D technology has realized the whole space simulation of real world by images and film narrative is changing from emphasizing time to space, which requires some researches on it. Therefore, for my future study, I may explore the relation between technology and space.
