A Criticism of The Exploitation of Capitalism Reflected in The Grapes of Wrath
2020-02-03 来源: 51Due教员组 类别: Essay范文
The Grapes of Wrath depicts the story of the large number of farmers who went bankrupt and fled during the economic recession of the United States in the 1930s. The indignation and struggle of American peasants can be said to be an epic of modern American peasants. In the essay, it is argued that The Grapes of Wrath is criticizing the exploitation of capitalism by reflecting the social struggle experienced by American peasants.
The Grapes of Wrath is a vivid description of the suffering, and the struggles of the American peasants. In the 1930s, after bankruptcy, peasants lived a tragically miserable life. A large number of peasants were deprived of their subsistence by banks and large corporations, and were forced to leave their homeland to find attractive jobs in those orchards. But California is not a paradise for bankrupt farmers. Big employers use surplus labor to wantonly lower their wages. Once picking of peaches in the orchard, and cottonseed in the cotton fields is completed, the workers were immediately driven out. After a brief period of hard working, the peasants have no steady income and are unable to maintain their existence. They are only constantly relocating and constantly looking for new job. Cold and hunger along the way makes farmers reduced to ragged refugees. However, the protagonists are kind and industrious, who have honest beliefs and perseverance. There is a glorious humanity in the power of survival of those peasants.
In addition, the book tries to explore the cause of suffering and points out its connections with capitalism. At first, people did not know who was to blame. When tractors was to destroy their houses and to cultivate the land that originally belonged to them, the tractor drivers were the people they originally knew. The instruction that the bank accepts came from the big west, and the peasant did not know who really destroyed them. Capitalists burned the mountain of oranges and grapes to bury a lot of pigs in order to keep the prices of these things up, and millions of wanderers starved to death because they could not eat anything. Even grapes have become angry. Everyone in the book says it can not blame the big banks, and big companies. But in fact corporations and capital are invisible oppressors, and in the end there are always human beings. Although there is no direct oppressor, it is an intensification of oppression. However, such oppression does not seem to be lasting. No matter who the real bad people, the anger is real, and people's souls, anger is accumulating. The angry grapes will always mature, and the trial will certainly come.
The Grapes of Wrath not only describes the dreadful lifestyle of farmers in the Great Plains, but also reflects the impact of the economic capitalist mode of production on people's life in the United States at the deep level. It thus strongly criticizes the exploitation of capitalism.
