However, the most interesting part is that the female protagonist Hester has such a strong sense of identity that she prefers to keep her identity instead of keeping her honor and getting a better life.

In fact, in the story the Scarlett Letter, the girl Hester Prynne had an affair with an older man called Dimmesdale. This affair had caused her to be humiliated in public. Also, she knows what her identity is and when the affair was exposed and she was forced to wear a symbol of humiliation, she did not choose to leave the place. Most girls in her condition will leave the town to start a new life, especially to start a new life in a place where no one knows the shameful history. However, for her, she did not obey the social rule because she knew what her passion and beliefs are. In the end, although she knew that keeping this symbol on her body will cause her to suffer from humiliation and alienation. Even though she felt disappointed about keeping the symbol on her, she does not have the desire to convince the public to like her or to get the public to accept her. For her, the letter is only a part of who she is and it does not matter what others think of her, it is not necessary to escape from the symbol.

To conclude, the most impressive part of the female protagonist is her determination as well as her firm attitude to keep her own identity. It is obvious that she is an independent woman which great knowledge and firm beliefs about what kind of person she needs to be. Even though she has to accept the humiliation as well as the shame that she has to bear, she would not abandon her identity and she will not let the society tell her what she has to do. Therefore, the most important theme is the protagonist’s special strength, her high self esteem and her firm beliefs in her own identity.
