The rampancy of the trade of black slaves is a shame to human history. This paper concentrates on that how slaves live and fight in the plantation in the south of United States. What’s more, we will see how slaves choose their ways to fight against the misery and which way is a better one.
Body
We take Sankofa as some material to analyze the thesis. Sankofa is a film by 1993, which is directed by Haile Gerima, focusing on the Atlantic slave trade. The strange name of the movie is a word from African local language, which means ‘reach back and get it’. The Ethiopia director wants this word to be the symbol of connecting the past and present. Though most scenes of the film happen in the past, Gerima believes the significance of the film lies in providing the right direction for both the present and future.
According to the movie and historical data (Tedla and Elleni, 16-23), we all know, during the slave trade and under the institution of slavery, African slaves are discriminated and tortured by those colonists, capitalists and owners of the plantations. In order to expand trade market and plunder resources, these greedy slaveholders caught as many black men as possible and then sold them like animals or goods. At the beginning of the film, Moma saw dozens of black men curling up in a small room. They only had few clothes to cover themselves and all of them were locked by chains. We can see despair and numbness from their eyes, which is the only emotion they could feel. Moma screamed and ran out because she could not believe what she had saw since she was in a civilized world just a minute ago. Then some whites caught her and tore off her clothes, leaving a mark on her back with a hot iron. Those slaveholders never cared about if the slave was male or female, and what they cared about was just if the slave could be sold in a satisfying price.
Millions of black were trafficked into capitalist countries, and the black at ten times of that number were killed during this process. Weak or dying slaves were just thrown into the sea. No one cared about these slaves, even if themselves. A parrot of the captain or a dog of the planter may attract more attention than these slaves from their masters. This has been the most important factor which results in the poor and vulnerable Africa now.
During the slave trade and under the institution of slavery, different people had different ideas. Most of the slaves were trapped in this situation and willing to endure torture and maltreatment. We can see this in the film. For example, when a pregnant woman was whipped up, no one dared to walk forward to stop this misery. They were afraid of being punished too. However, there will always be someone who has different idea. Nunu and shango were typical ones who dared to resist oppression and struggle for future. Nunu was an African-born field hand. She used knowledge given by her motherland. She encouraged and guided her compatriots to live positively and showed these slaves how to fight against themselves and predators. Shango was someone more aggressive, and he was not satisfied with the situation either. He wanted to kill overseers and plantation owners to fight for a bright future. Just like an old saying, ‘Silence is not broke, you die in silence’. At last, these numb slaves turned anger into strength; they stole the gun and knife and turned these weapons to those oppressors. What’s more, near the end of the film, the overseer got down from the horse and walked to Shola. He wanted to rape Shola again. Shola was a soft girl; she didn’t want to hurt those villains at first even they had hurt her painfully. She said she would not hurt anybody whatever they had done to her. However, after being rapped and whipped, she changed. When the rapist walked towards to her, Shola could not stand his evil eyes any more. She lifted her machete up and hacked down the white overseer.
Since someone chose to fight for his ethnic group, someone else chose to shun his fellow citizens. Joe was Nunu’s son, who was not satisfied with his living conditions, either. But when Nunu was a leader of the resistance and had used her knowledge of African custom and religion as a source of strength, Joe refused Africa, and therefore refused his mother. Joe became a head man, who handled the work of punishment. Head men enjoyed better living conditions and the benefits of less labor. But these advantages along with the position of head man all came at the expense of suffering endured by their African fellows.
Joe considered himself as a Bible-fearing Christian, and turned to the plantation minister Father Raphael for guidance. However, this was a wrong decision. Father Raphael was a liar and told Joe to pray harder and to keep away from Nunu, who Raphael referred to as ‘that heathen Guinea woman’ (Gerima). We can frequently see Joe praying to a picture of the Virgin Mary and Child, in an effort to remove himself from his mother and the other enslaved Africans. He was doubtful about his situation, so Joe blindly worshipped the white Virgin Mary. When Joe had a quarrel with his mother about his faith, he accidentally killed his mom for defending his Virgin Mary. With so much sacrifice, Joe thought he would be closer to the cross. However, we all know Father Raphael and other colonists still believed that those black slaves were domesticated savages. That’s why Joe killed Father Raphael at the end of the movie, because he was disappointed with his faith.
Conclusion
Trapped in the dark time, not everyone can find the hope and direction to a bright future. Some people betray their ethnic group and culture; they turn to their enemy to beg for better conditions at the price of their fellows’ blood. They have no strong heart and will. But there will always be heroes leading the people to fight against the enemy and predator. We do know freedom will not come without the struggle and fight. So yielding to colonists does not bring true respect and freedom; you need to fight for getting that. I respect that Nunu and Shango chose a harder way to resist oppression. But what they chose was better than Joe did. Slaveholders will not stop hunting and killing the black until they are scared. Just like Joe: you think you have been a white Christian; the white just see you as an animal.
