Introduction
China has a rich food culture and Chinese people take eating as an integral part in their lives. There is an old saying in China that food is the paramount necessity of the people, which demonstrates the importance of food to Chinese people. Unfortunately, there are numerous problems exist in the food industry. Food safety is the most serious one, so the goal of the paper is to analyze what food safety problems faced by Chinese people.
The Food Safety Problem faced by Chinese People
Almost all nutrients that support people’s life are generated from food. From this perspective, people need to know how to eat rationally and scientifically. Meanwhile, it is said that disease enters by the mouth, so guarantee the cleanness of food in the growth and transportation process is significant. Unfortunately, researches find that most Chinese consumers do not have a comprehensive knowledge on food safety and handling. At the same time, to improve output and earn more profits, numerous farmers and merchants add a large number of additives and pesticides to food which will have a serious effect on human health. Moreover, there are numerous kinds of genetically modified (GM) foods in Chinese market, but most Chinese consumers lack the most basic understanding of biotechnology and its potential risks. Hence, Chinese government and relevant authorities need to intensify supervision on food manufacturing and transportation process. Consumers themselves need to acquire more knowledge in food and achieve the goal of healthy eating.
Comparison among the Three Researches
The Primary Source and the Secondary Source demonstrate Chinese consumers’ low level of knowledge on food safety in different perspectives. The Primary Source is mainly focused on the food handling in households (Gong et al., 2016). In this paper, food is a general concept and the authors do not distinguish the categories of the food. However, the foods discussed in the Secondary Source are genetically modified crops and derived food products(Vermeer, 2006). Similarly, without a basic understanding, Chinese consumers’ purchasing behaviors on GM food are also blind and unscientific. These two studies are academic papers and the conclusions are got by sample collection and data analysis, which are more reliable. Different from those two papers, the Website discusses the negative effects caused by the food safety scandals reported in recent years through interviewing ordinary consumers, relevant authority officers and professional experts. It reveals the problems exist in the process of food safety supervision (Anonymous, 2013). Comparing to the academic language, directly referring to the words said by the interviewees could make the news more vivid and impresses the readers deeply. Since the food safety scandals were reported in 2013, I would like to know what have the authorities do in the past three years. What’s the current situation and doChinese people still need to worry about the food safety issue?
The authors of the Primary Source use statistical method to analyze respondents’ choices. It firstly defines the questions, and to guarantee the sample can reflect the basic situation of the whole population, it uses a non-systematic way. Then, SPSS software is used to perform all statistical analyses(Gong et al., 2016). To sum them up, the Primary Reference meets the basic steps of the scientific method.
Conclusion
Chinese people have a low level of knowledge on both food handling and genetically modified foods, which risks Chinese citizens’ health to a great extent. Meanwhile, the food safety scandals expose the flaws exist in the supervision process. Hence, citizens and relevant authorities need to work together to guaranteethat the public do not need to worry about what’s on their tables.
