The only proper thing for businesses and business persons to do is “to make as much money as possible while conforming to the basic rules of the society, both those embodied in law and those embodied in ethical custom.”

To support his opinion, Friedman stated that the corporate executives are just employees. If they use the money for charities, they are actually embezzling the stockholders’ money without permission. That is to say, if the executive wants to do something good for the society, he can only do it with his own money under his personal credit. But is he does that, it has nothing to do with the business. It would just be a personal behavior.

In addition, the executives should be just playing his own role as a manager to the company. It is the government’s job to collect taxes from the rich and distribute it to the poor. If he uses the money for social purpose, he would be playing the role of the government. That’s a kind of ultra vires and it may lead to some social disorders.

Moreover, the businessmen are not experts and they don’t know how to make the best use of the money to the whole society. Therefore, it may even be a waste of money and time for them to give out money. It may also lead to a weird consequence that the government may think the businesses do have some responsibilities to the society and they may even come up with laws and policies. The result would be bad for both the business and the society, as predicted.

The ideas are not wrong, but I suppose there was a different background of the whole society when Friedman published this idea. Doing things for the society can bring the company a lot of advantages. For one thing, companies always want to last for long. Sometimes give out some rewards can improve the public image and the reputation to a large extent. For another, although invisible, the government’s control is always there for the market. They can balance between responsibility and obligation. The companies, too, can use the money to the right degree. Especially in the modern society, with so many people learning and researching business, it would be no difficulties at all to find expert to give advises.

As for whether businesses have responsibilities for the society, it would be a more complex problem. Things would be simpler if we just deem that giving reward to the society is the required cost for the companies. After all with the advent of the information age, every company and every person are connected together. The pressure from the public should never be underestimated. Time would be so hard for the companies that are despised by people because of their ignorance to the “social responsibility”.
