A lot of people say that when a person decides to travel to a new place, usually, this person will find that this new place is too wonderful or fascinating for him or for her because this new nation or new city is a bit like a labyrinth or a maze for them. For certain people, they might agree that the new place is more like a labyrinth because they come to the custom, the only entrance in this place first but later on, they have to find the destination that they have planned and go there to visit it. After these people go there to visit it, they will return immediately. On the contrary, for other people to travel to a new place, they think of this new land as a maze because they are able to find different paths that might lead them to unexpected destinations.
In the same trip, We also went to the Kyoto. In this place, there a very famous street called Hanamikoji. I remember it because it is famous for geisha. When people are walking on the street, they will see the history and there a lot of stores and restaurants. We went to the historical scenic spots and stores we planned to go and returned from our destination, which is a typical labyrinth tour with specific destination, beginning with one entry and ends with one exit.
Another thing which impressed me greatly and subtly deepened my understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture is to attend and experience the tea and flower ceremony. It is totally a fresh experience for me, from which I can figure out that it is actually a labyrinth considering its level of difficulty and significance in human’s spiritual mind map. Japanese culture promotes simplicity and individualism or rather solitude. When people are sitting on the major sit and making flower works, they are experiencing a labyrinth that is so simple with only some natural flowers and tools. This process, which seems to be silent and alone, is actually an enjoyment in people’s minds. In this way, people are going through a communication with themselves, with the nature, with other people as well as with their beliefs and their gods. The communication is invisible with the path is simple and specific and shares much similarities with pilgrimageage. A pilgrimageage, in its traditional sense, is a journey in search of one’s spiritual shrine or destination with their own beliefs or faith. Throughout the journey, people keep walking or worshiping with bended knees. These actions are also extremely simple but when we look into these simple actions, we can discover the powerful faith and resistant strength from the people. They communicate with their gods and their inner selves in this way. For Japanese people, tea ceremony, to some extent is also a pilgrimageage. Firstly, it is an experience with simple and direct destination, when they finish some steps or achieve one sense of spiritual satisfaction; they stop and start enjoying their works and their inner peace. Secondly, the experience is simple and alone. No complicated physical setting or preparation are required, only one seat, one person, one cup of tea, one vase and some flowers and tools, anybody can start this tea and flower ceremony. However, this ceremony is serious and solemn, where one needs to calm down, adjust his breath, pay attention to details, to their inner word and the spiritual destination s/he aims at. After one person is ready, the ceremony can claim its beginning. Thirdly, in a pilgrimage, people keep talking to themselves and their gods and their arrival at the destination can’t be secured without insistence and extremely strong belief. In tea and flower ceremony, the process may seem boring to outsider, thus also requires a real communication between the person involved and his god and nature perspective. Otherwise, this process would probably be interrupted by bored feeling and its simplicity. Finally, in this process, people achieve the significance of cleanse, peace, faith and reconfirmation of themselves and the world. Therefore, Japanese tea and flower ceremony is a parallel and equivalent experience with pilgrimage in terms of its form, purpose, process and significance.
After connecting these dots of travelling with the knowledge of labyrinth, the bigger picture begins to be shaped in my mind and let me realize that even though I went to different countries and experienced different cultures, but my journey is a labyrinth and my experience there share similarities with labyrinth. This, as far as I’m concerned, is the most amazing part of traveling and study.
