Shirley Turkle’s essay is themed on the relationship of mobile phone and the reduction of conversation. She argues that the use of smart phone may reduce face-to-face conversation in our daily life, while conversation is beneficial to empathy and self-reflection. Turkle, therefore, calls on the resumption of face-to-face conversations and “reclaim conversation for yourself, your friendship and society.” In the main body of the passage, Turkle persuades the readers with ethos, pathos and logos, claiming that technology may do harm to the significant empathetic conversation in our everyday life.
