Reading stories is always interesting, after reading a story, review it is also worth doing. As for me, when doing story review, I think there are several aspects that could be considered: 1) the theme of the story; 2) the settings of different protagonists; 3) the dialogues in the story; 4) the detailed description in the story; 5) the conflicts; 6) the ending; 7) the language and etc. These are some of my considered aspects when reviewing a story, and next I will follow these aspects to review the story <The Chrysanthemum>.
At the first sight of the story title, to be honest, I can’t even guess the theme of this story, but that stirs my interest to continue reading.
At the first two paragraphs, the author has used exquisite descriptions to describe the scenery; he has portrayed a scene that the story happened in a foothill ranch under a winter day, with “”gray-flannel fog”, which founded the mood of the story. Though the language at the beginning of story is quiet plain, without any emotional words, it draws readers’ attention to have further reading.
Overall of story, there are three settings of protagonists, who are Henry Allen, Elisa Allen and a “big man”, as portrayed in the story. The author has used fine and smooth language to delineate the images of three protagonists. Especially Elisa, read the detailed descriptions in lines, we could have an image about her: a married middle-aged woman who works in a farm, with no delicate make-up or beautiful clothes, but with “a man’s black hat”, “clod-hopper shoes” and “heavy leather gloves”. Conversely, Elisa’s eyes “are as clear water”, and this is one of the contrasts. Although the author has not used as much descriptions as done about Elisa, we still could know that Henry and the “big man” are strong, or it could be described as “take the power”. Through the description at first about Elisa, it seems that She wants to demonstrate that she could do the things as man, with its under-meaning to reveal in that ages, women were not considered highly and had few power to make choices and decisions.
In this story, a lot of plots and story conflicts are shown in the protagonists’ dialogues. The dialogue between Henry and Elisa and the dialogue between Elisa and the “big man” show different characteristics of Elisa. When reading the dialogue between Henry and Elisa, we could get an idea that Elisa has more or less obedience towards her husband; and as for the dialogues between Elisa and the “big man”, she has emotional ups and downs. I think the dialogues in the whole story play an important role in painting the image of Elisa: on one side towards her husband, she is obedient; on the other side towards the “big man”, she has different inner feelings. And this is the conflict in the story, and the dialogues show this conflict well.
But actually, I think the author did not provide enough background information to readers to understand the story. This story was told in the third person, which shows that the author wants to tell this story in a more objective way. This narrative way provides room for readers to try to figure out the inner feelings of Elisa.
To me, I think the last two paragraphs of the story are dramatic and worth after-tasting. These two paragraphs describe the plot that when Henry and Elisa are going out, Elisa’s inner feelings about the chrysanthemum she gave to the “big man”, her soliloquy and struggle, and her unnatural behavior, which show she is entangled after giving her precious chrysanthemum to the “big man”.
Actually, in the story, the chrysanthemum symbolizes the dream of a woman; or simply says that, it symbolizes Elisa, a woman who is weak. The story reveals the fact that in that era, men have the absolute power to take control the world, the country or even the family, women hardly have the right of speech, what women need to do is be obedient to men, and do not arrogate “the world of men”.
In this story, obviously, Elisa has the behavior that makes her husband feel, “she has changed”, “I mean you look different, strong and happy”, “You look so nice” and etc. That is because her husband doesn’t used to see Elisa acts like that, he feels puzzled and a little bit astonished. Especially when talking about the boxing game, in the past, Elisa has little interest about it, as in her mind, she maybe told that it is the world she cannot arrogate, and that world just belongs to man, not women. But in the last paragraph, Elisa has raised some questions about the boxing game directly, which makes Henry feel like Elisa is not the one he used to know, he feels astonished.
The last sentence of the last paragraph, “She turned up her coat collar so he could not see that she was crying weakly – like an old woman” indicates what Elisa feels exactly --- she thought the “big man” was warmhearted, was willing to take her precious chrysanthemum to the other lady, she thought he was a good guy. But when she saw that the man has just abandoned her chrysanthemum away, the treasure in her heart has been thrown away at random, she feels deeply sad, but helpless, because she cannot tell anything about that to her husband, which makes her feel struggled.
The author makes the last two paragraphs dramatic and affords food for thought, he has used a lot of dialogues to demonstrate different characteristics of the protagonists, and the body movements and facial expression of each protagonists also add significance to the story.
Overall, as I evaluate above, about the theme, the settings of protagonists, the conflicts and etc. in the story, I think <The Chrysanthemum> is a story worth reading, with it uncovers the inequality between men and women at that time. And I consider the author has used different techniques of expression to tell the story, not just present the story simply.
