The form of the poem neither abides by strict rhyme nor free verse. There are rhymes such as "is", "hands", "goes" and "ful", "wall", but there is not a strict rule throughout the poem. The poem is divided into two stanzas, which are both composed of nine lines. The first stanza tells the nature of a mirror, which only reflects the truth while the second stanza tells the tragic fact of a young girl's aging in the lake, which is a metaphor of mirror. I think metaphor and personification are two poetic devices in this poem. Mirror is personified as a living thing, which can also feel lonely when it's left alone. Metaphor plays the most important role. Mirror is compared as a little god who has a omniscient view of everything in it. Mirror is also compared as a lake, which is much more dimensional and dynamic is reflecting a woman's face. In addition, simile is also adopted as shown in the line of "like a terrible fish". As for the tone of the poem, I think it's pessimistic which can be referred by the words such as "drown", "lonely", "terrible" and etc. I think the poem tries to inform the readers of a well-known fact that a young girl cannot fight against the power of time and will eventually becomes an ugly, old lady.
I am a silver mirror and can reflect a person's appearance very exactly. I have no prejudice against anybody or any thing. Whatever things stand in front of me, I reflect the real appearance immediately without any distortion. No matter I like it or not, I won't change a single part of it. If I reflect the ugly part, it's not because I am cruel but only truthful. I can see things very clearly as a god does because god is everywhere and almighty. I think about the opposite wall most of the time. The wall is pink and has some speckles. I have looked at the wall for very long time, so the wall is part of my heart and my only friend. But I cannot always see the wall because when people stand in front of me or when there is no light, people's faces and darkness would stand between me and the wall. Now, I change from a mirror into a lake. A woman bends over in front of me and tries to see her real appearance from the water mirror. Under the light of candles and the moon, she is misled and thinks she is better looking than her true-self. However, when the woman sees true-self in me, she realizes her mistakes. She feels very sad and angry for her ugliness. She sheds tears into the water and messes up her image in the water with her hands. I am important in her life. Every morning when the night is over, the woman comes to the lake and check her appearance. With the days passing by, the woman's young face is missing from the lake and is gradually replaced by a old face, ugly as a fish face.
"Mirror" is a poem about women's helplessness in keeping their youth and beauty. However, I think on a deeper level, it shows the poet's depression and frustration over the whole world. To her, everything beautiful would vanish eventually. The metaphor of god has much symbolic meaning in this part. By looking at ourselves in the mirror, we can be manipulated by the mirror. Or more actually, it has much power over us. A mirror can make us depressed a whole day if it reflects the ugly truth and it can also give us much confidence of we are fabulous in it.The description of the wall as a part of the mirror's heart is also a symbolic metaphor. People's heart can also be "pink, with speckles" (7). Sometimes, we are happy but there are always something unsatisfying. We would feel sad or hurt due to various experiences. Just like the wall with speckles, our heart is also with some holes. hurt by some sad experiences. So we see where the mirror might be confused. Also, after staring at something so long a time the mirror must feel it has some kind of relationship with this wall. The mirror's meditation on the wall is interrupted by "faces and darkness.
Personally, I love the poem very much. On a scale from 1 to 10, I would give the poem a 10. I think the poem is very profound in expressing the essence of mirror and offers the readers various philosophical interpretation over it. Some may argue that it criticizes women's over-concern of outside appearance while some hold that many women's fate rely only on their beauty and when the beauty is missing, they are discarded by men immediately. I think the best poem offers the readers infinite possibility to interpret it. As shown in Frost's "The Road Not Taken", it also enables the readers to meditate upon their own life choices in different ways.-M
