To prepare for my next year at school, recently I have skimmed some websites that provides detailed information about scholarship and bursaries. In order to reduce the heavy load of tuition fees and living expense as well as to motivate my study, I am interested in the following three scholarships and one bursary: two automatic scholarships, one scholarship asking for application, and Laurier Work Study Program.
The first I would like to pursue is the In-course Scholarship which is calculated based on the academic merit, the GPA, from the previous academic year. This scholarship is divided into three classes corresponding to three different level of money. To get the highest amount of money, $1,500, students are required to get an excellent GPA ranging from 11.00 to 12.00, and to get the value of $750 or $500, students need to acquire GPA 10.50-10.99 or 10.00-10.49 respectively. Additional requirement addresses that students must be registered in more than five full credits in their normal academic terms but for those freshmen, in the fall and winter semesters. I am targeting at the highest value and thus I must perform well in my academic study, showing my aggressiveness, diligence and intelligence, to get the minimum GPA of 11.00.The second scholarship that I want to compete for is the Entrance Scholarships. This scholarship is similar to the In-course Scholarship for it does not require application but attach great importance in academic performance. But the highest value of this scholarship is $ 2,000, much higher than that of the In-course Scholarship. In addition, this scholarship regards the secondary school grades and the best six final U/M level marks as the evaluation criteria. Therefore, it is suitable for me to compete for because I am a freshmen student in the university and my grads in secondary school are satisfying the requirements.
The last scholarship I want to apply for the President’s Gold Scholarship. This scholarship values $3,000 for the first year and afterwards, it is renewable at $5,000. The value of money is very attractive but the requirements are much more restricted that the two above. It asks for not only a good academic merit— a minimum GPA of 10.50 during the fall, winter and spring semester of the previous academic year— but also various extracurricular activities or volunteer work. Therefore, to meet the requirements, I will work hard in my study and get the GPA as high as possible. At the same time, I will participate in some clubs in the university or do some volunteer work in communities. When I meet the requirements, I will submit the online student profile to LORIS.
If I have spare time, I will join the Laurier Work Study Program which offers part-time job opportunities on campus. I will visit the Student Awards office as early as possible and apply for the jobs. I will get funded from $2000 to $3000 annually. This helps me earn maintenance fees, get familiar with the campus, gain experience of interacting with students and teachers, and arouse my awareness of independence.
In sum, hard-working, all-rounded development and time management are the precondition of achieving these scholarships. Also, I should pay more attention to the deadline of application or submission.-M
