I am a “heavy sleeper” in layman terms, which makes it difficult for me to remember my dreams unless they are particularly vivid. Yet, from the fragments of my dreams that I managed to record in the past week, I am able to observe certain patterns. My friends often characterize me as wired or easily tensed up, and I believe that my dreams support their description. Usually, before I go to bed, I check my to-do list for the day and see if I had missed out on anything, and then make plans for the next day. And my dreams, though not directly relevant, can generally be associated with my daily tasks, especially the prioritized ones. For instance, for three consecutives days, I dreamt about traffic. The images were mixed and montaged, including traffic jams, car accidents, bustling pedestrians and so forth. I was sitting in a car in one of the dreams, while in the other two, I was taking the perspective of a passer-by. I suppose it is natural to make connection between these dreams and my upcoming road test, in which case my dreams most likely provide support for problem-solving theory. I have been pretty nervous about my driving test, mostly because I cannot afford to fail and take the test again with my busy schedule. Though I have not given enough attention to my psychological state, my dreams about the road could potentially be attempts in helping me resolve my anxiety, or at least alerting me to attend to it. However, taking an alternative perspective, the fact that my dreams can be vaguely yet consistently associated with my day-to-day activities fits the description of cognitive view of dream theory as well. Nevertheless, the above analysis is based on dream fragments that I could recall. A more coherent dream log can probably be interpreted differently.

Interestingly enough, while I am conducting this analysis, I realize that my apartment does locate quite closely to the main road. Although I have gotten accustomed to the traffic noise and hardly recognize their existence through the years, the noise may still impact the content of my dreams, according to the activation-synthesis theory. As mentioned earlier, I am not easily disturbed in my sleep, yet, that does not prohibit sounds from entering my ears. My brain’s unresponsiveness towards the traffic noise may have encouraged the interpretation of traffic images in my dreams.-M
