There are numerous kinds of way that people show their insensitivity about others. People want to take up profits as much as possible. People show disrespect to other people because they want to hold the point that they are the better one. People are indifferent when others need help because they are afraid of getting trouble when helping others. All these behaviors reveal the cruelty of the society. These actions may not lead to tremendous disaster in a short time, but it will erode the sense of trust and harmony of the whole society, which is very dreadful in a long term.

The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, which is written by Sun-Mi Hwang, tells a very touching story about the entire life of a special hen. The story is painful and striking. The heroine, sprout, went through a lot of difficulties during her short but splendid life. The first bad person that sprout encountered is the farmer. They go for their own profits at sacrificing the interest of others. The farmers collected the egg laid by Sprout to earn money. As soon as Sprout cannot afford qualified egg, they abandon her immediately. Similarly, weasel wants to kill Sprout and Straggler to save its own life. Both of them just put their interest in the first place, without caring about others. They focus on chasing their profits, hardly realizing or feeling sorry that their behavior severely violates the rights of Sprout.

Nevertheless, in some occasion, even though people realize that their action or what they are enjoying is at others’ sacrifice, they just ignore it or accept the truth because they do not want to lose what they have. This reminds me of the story, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. Everyone has a very pleasant and satisfied life there, as described in the story, “Omelas sounds in my words like a city in a fairy tale, long ago and far away, once upon a time”. (LeGuin, 2) But all this fabulous stuff that they enjoy depending on the misery of an innocent child. When they are having a big summer festival, the pity child is starving and stuck in a dirty and shady room without a window. The people in Omelas just abandon the baby to his fate, no matter whether they feel sorry for what it suffers. All adults know the existence of the child but no one dare bring it into the sunlight because as soon as they do, their happiness will be gone for good. Though they know it is cruel, many people still ignore it and live in Omelas with guilt. They just have their celebrations as if nothing was wrong in Omelas. It is not an uncommon phenomenon that nowadays a number of people obtain their interests at the expense of others. Some developed countries maintain their power to interrupt other poorer countries’ policy to get “privilege”, regardless of lives there; for example, some merchants produce and sell low-quality products selling as good ones to customers, regardless of the harm to them, and some people just want themselves to have a better life, so they abandon their parents, regardless of the condition.

Tendency to achieve happiness and blessing is the nature of human beings, but at cost of other’s satisfaction is inhuman. It is too ruthless to enjoy the happiness which is obtained by others’ pain. What if you were the baby who is enduring the hopeless life in the dark room? Why should it had this suffering? Everyone is fair and no one has the right to deprive other’s way of living to get what they want. I wish that there are people who will like the people who leave Omelas. They may go to a place “even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness” (LeGuin, 5), but they will have a life without guilt.

Some people show disrespect to others, flatulently considering they are the higher-class or more excellent species or just dislike others’ physical appearance. Like the description in The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, other animals expel Sprout out of the barn because she is an outsider and even the rooster, her kind of creature, dislikes her because of her appearance and regard himself as higher class. However, they are all fair in nature and they have no right to freely trample sprout’s self-esteem. These situations occur frequently in social society as well, especially between different races or genders. Just likes the story about Kamaal Majeed, the boy from Waltham, Massachusetts. He is treated unfairly since middle school, and there are always some people asking “why don’t you ‘act black’”, because he does not dress fat clothes and likes rock music, just like mostly black people do. The discrimination between racism still exists. Some people always believe that they are superior to others. They despise other races with words and attitude, and to do some unkind behaviors which they will never do to their companion. They want Kamaal Majeed does as they expect him to do. Nowadays, in the job market, the majority of females are less competitive just because of their gender.

But as Majeed wrote in the end of his story. “Being content with me, though, is not nearly as important as my being content with myself.”(Majeed, 2) The attitudes that others to you are not that important as yours. Contempt sometimes is cannot avoided. Its happen is not our fault. Consequently, we should love and respect ourselves. We should never look down on ourselves and compromise. Insist on what you want to do may make you unacceptable at a time, but being yourself will make you find inner peace in the end and people will finally show respect to you. The attack from words is very hard to notice, but the hurt will exist forever in the people who have experience. These behaviors make people with color, lower social status, and different gender in a stereotypical society feel abandoned and apart from the world. We are all human beings, living on the earth and building it together. There is no difference of rich and honor between races. Everyone can achieve something through his/her efforts, which definition should not be limited by these features.

People are indifferent to others because they are afraid of getting hurt by helping others. Instead of show kindness, they just ignore other’s need of help. The rooster in the story is a typical one. No matter how sprout explains her bad situation and the consequence of leaving the barn, the animal in the barn just ignore it and urge sprout to go back to coop the other day. It is quite common nowadays. Some people may have a heart attack and fall down on the street, but the passers-by just walk away without stopping to help; some people are stolen by thieves, but people around just let it happen; few people will give seats to pregnant women or children nowadays. Our economy grows rapidly but our virtue retrogresses rapidly as well. However, we are always underestimating the indifference of human beings. Ilan Halimi was kidnapped on January 21, 2006. During his imprison by the kidnappers in an apartment, the neighbors noticed and came to watch, at least 27 people, but none of whom came to call the police to rescue Halimi. One torturer’s father, Alcino Ribeiro, knew the whole thing but took no action to put an end to this accident. Finally Ilan Halimi was tortured to death, naked and 80% of his body burned. The tragedy can be avoided as long as one person to give his/her hand to help Halimi, even just givi-ng an anonymous call to the police. (Listverse Staff)

Indifference is more horrible than anger or hatred. People who show indifference to others can comfort themselves that they have done nothing evil but just without doing something good. But their nonfeasance may terminate a life. No one can be sure that they can be protected and safe for good. We will need the help for others sooner or later. It will be terrifying that everyone in the society just focusses on themselves and refuse to help others. The ignoring of people towards violence is another way to support evil. The devils will be not afraid of committing crime in public because no one dare uphold justice. People will lose the basic sense of safety because they may be attacked by criminal anywhere. Conniving at crime is equal to committing crime. A stable and safe society needs everyone to praise virtue and punish vice.

Life, always is tough. Sprout and straggler have a very positive attitude toward life. No matter what difficulties they meet during their whole life. So good they are, they are still killed in the end by the evil weasel. Sprout just wants to hatch an egg, which is her natural instinct. If the animals treated her more friendly in the barn, she would have a much better life. Will kind behavior do any damage to the animals in the barn? Her aspiration is always ignored; her bad situation brings little sympathy but more disrespect, humiliation, and indifference. If the people in Omelas free the poor baby from the dirty room, they may have a less wealthy life, but they can live without guilt. If everyone respects each other, the world will have more peace, fewer wars. If everyone have the conscious to help others, not just stand-by, more people will get rid of catastrophe.

Being selfish, disrespectful, indifferent, does no good to anyone in a long term. Being selfish to others, eventually, you will get selfishness in return, or be in a constant state of guilt. Being disrespectful to those who are disadvantaged groups now, one day in the future, when they are strong, you will be the scorn. Being indifferent to suffers, maybe one day, you will be the victim as well. The world is the home for all of us, no one wants to live in an unsafe and untrusting world. No one wants to be alone and helpless. Consequently, fold your insensibility and be kind to others, make the society more human instead of inhuman.-M
