About 500 years ago, a man named Martin Luther sparked the Protestant Reformation, which, exerted enduring effects on Europe, and even the world. At the heart of this reformation was the protest against some practices among the most authoritative Roman Catholic Church. This landmark reformation has served as the basis for the founding of Protestantism - one of the three main branches of Christianity. From then on, more and more branches of Christianity came into existence. Therefore, the effects of Protestant Reformation may be analyzed from the following aspects.
To begin with, it is the rebellious spirit of the initiator Martin Luther that shake the supreme papal rule, emancipated hundreds of thousands of Christians at that time and encouraged more to stand up and fight for themselves. Later on, it found its way into another school of thought - Postmodernism, which has been wielding and will still wield influences on various other aspects of the society.
Next comes to the practice to think out of the box. At that time, Christians were rushing to buy the indulgences promoted by the Roman Catholic Church, following the line of apostolic succession. They all turned a blind eye to the corruption of the church except Martin Luther, who, came up with the idea that there is no mention in the Bible about the indulgences and claimed individual Christian’s rights to talk directly to God. This unique way of thinking also contributed to the importance of this event.
Last but not the least, the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther has opened up the possibility of the individual’s direct communication with God, embracing pluralism instead of monism or dualism and creating a complicated situation of Christianity. Protestantism, with its numerous sub-branches, took over ever since, so that a vast array of Christians were able to embrace Christianity in their own way and a relatively tolerant religious atmosphere was born.-M
