Referring to the article, “The Effect of Personality on Daily Life Emotional Processes, ” in Public Library of Science, researchers found that people can develop their relationship quality by being narcissistic. Moreover, narcissists have a greater chance to be a successful leader than the others. In the past, parents quickly taught their children the importance of sharing and considering others’ needs before their own. Now, some young people gradually concern only their own happiness and pursue self-satisfaction. In addition, they only reflect upon their fellows needs when it benefits them, namely, this is the “me” the generation. Critics assert that this is a society with a serious illness. Nowadays, the unbalance between the idolatry and reality, excessive praise in the childhood, overindulgence and overvalued from parents or other family members are all the causes to generate narcissism for young people. However, narcissism is essential for the young in this era because the narcissistic personality has a lot of positive effects on both their relationships and future developments.

One of the reasons for why the young need to be narcissistic is that narcissism can truly lead to a better relationship. Narcissists has a tendency to show an interest on the interpersonal relationship with a warmth and careful way. Most of the narcissists are positive, and in order to be successful and important, narcissists are more likely to help others and generate effective relationships. The effect relationship is obviously play an important role for young people to develop themselves.

In addition to a better relationship. Another reason why narcissism become essential is that selfishness is an important element for success. “To be successful, you have to be selfish, or else you never achieve.” Michael Jordan asserted when he was selected into Naismith Basketball Hall of fame. Referring to the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, people with higher socioeconomic status (SES) were more likely to behave unethically when behavior benefited themselves. That means that the narcissism can help people to achieve their success. According to the article, “Narcissism And Leadership,” in Personnel Psychology, Grijalva reports, “The narcissism–leadership correlation is stronger for leadership emergence than for leadership effectiveness, as expected, leadership emergence was positively related to narcissism, and the credibility interval for the leadership effectiveness effect size was relatively wide (80% CV = [–.15, .20]) ” Namely, a success leader can perfectly start a business and run a corporation which need dedication, guts, determination, and truly being in love with your own ideas enough to pursue them heavily, and also many consider success and welfare a consequence of being narcissistic.

Lastly，supporters who insist narcissism is harmful for the whole society believe that there are so many people are selfless who finally achieved their life without narcissism. However, being selfless is actually a kind of behavior that benefits themselves. According to the article, “The nature of human altruism,” the author argues that altruism is not benefiting others for no reason. That means that the altruists benefit others for reaching other things. On the one hand, narcissists also tend to benefit others for the purpose of gaining returns, which do no harm to anyone or the society. For example, a steward tries his best to take care of almost everything carefully in the employer’s house so that he might have a greater opportunity to earn higher wages for his family. What do you think of that? Is it really harmful? On the other hand, being narcissistic is obviously different from being exploitative, arrogant, and even tyrannical. What people tend to be is a balance between giving and gaining, which are idealistic. In other words, when giving and gaining become equal, the gap of wealth will no longer exist. Young people should know when they have to give and when they need to concern themselves. In order to go up to a higher stage of life, narcissism is necessary for them.

In conclusion, narcissism have an important effect on the young people. Narcissism can truly lead to a better and effective relationship, which can help young develop themselves and make more people. And most of the narcissists are selfish, but selfish is an important element for success, narcissists are not only more likely to concern their own benefits, but also make a lot of contributions to the society. In addiction, there also many people think the narcissism is harmful. But just in my opinion, narcissism can help people to improve the quality of their life, when the gap is disappearing, the problem that people worried about the harm of the narcissism is also no longer exist. Thus, narcissistic personality is essential for the young.
