This memorandum reports the progress in my research into the cost-effective means of preventing and mitigating soil erosion to figure out engineering ways of preventing erosion in the areas prone to soil washing by surface run-off from either rainfall or wing ice. As I proposed, I have been gathering information by reviewing technical literature on soil erosion. My objectives were meant to search means, assess its viability, determine the method of going about it.

I have found bioengineering means were possibilities of application. Engineering controls for sediment control such as cofferdams, turbidity curtains, sediment traps, and settling ponds were among the identified engineering means of erosion mitigation. The recommendations of these means were derived from Terra Erosion Control Ltd, a Canadian environmental service company. Other means that have been in use for prevention of erosion is the gabions (Julia & Ioannis, 2009). Their construction has found improvement from the use of long lasting and stable materials to increase durability and reliability.

I have also learned  that replanting is the most reliable and cost-effective means for soil erosion control. This is because the plants are naturally available and cheap in application. However, unlike the engineering means that takes effect on establishment, replanting takes time as the plants mature. Thus complimenting the replanting with minimum engineering approaches was identified as the most appropriate in terms of cost effectiveness and reliability (Julia & Ioannis, 2009).
 
In addition, I also assessed effective means to communicate the control methods to the stakeholders in need to control soil erosion. The means that needed effective communication shall entail the initiatives that the locals can employ in the erosion mitigation, including the tilling practices, replanting procedures, crop choices, and crop and residue cover procedures (Julia & Ioannis, 2009). The best way identified, according to respondents, was to hold exhibitions and demonstrations.
Work remaining
 
I still need to find some effective engineering approaches that can be implemented by the farmer or by the local communities. And further research is needed on the changes of the tilling tools that could help in areas with loose and eroding soil.
