In this thesis I will analysis two American movies and elaborate the cognition I learned. This thesis mainly focuses on the prison education reflected in American movies; use the adult education principle of pedagogy, introduce the prison education system reflected in American movies and further discussed. At first, we will start at the early age of the American prison, analysis its early chaos situation and system; and then introduce its development, operation conditions and a series of status caused by system; then based on the prison education situation of federal system of capitalism, and expounds its present running status and main achievements. Finally through the introduction and analysis of the movie “The Shawshank Redemption” and the movie “The longest yard” we can study their main teaching program, and finally we can enhance the prison management and education of our country. As the indispensable authority of every country, prison is concerned by a lot of people. Our nation is still very young, and is in a initial stage in this inspect, this article through the study and discuss of the world’s most developed country’s prison movie, by using the Andragogy, investigate deep into the development process and the present situation of their prison, find out it transforms from both spiritual hierarchy and physically two aspects at the same time. And its citizens cooperate with them very actively. After a period of teaching, finally the criminal can transform into a “perfect person” that have the ability to live a normal life independently. And finally we can come up the conclusion: Prison education is a very important part of American. With the popularity of English in China, as the very outstanding country for its social security issues last century, its prison education caused a lot concern and attention in our country. Through the study in this article, we can know that contemporary American prison education is not completely depend on the government’s education and reform, and the prisoner have a strong ability to rebuild themselves the national authority provide them an opportunity to learn and improve themselves. The criminals can be in the society after the efforts of transformation and create wealth once again. From this we can see the national institutions to respond for its citizens and its rich cultural deposits, although our country has founded in a rather short time, through the study of these countries our country can achieve a higher level soon.
American has the highest crime-rate in the world, and the prison also has the most people all around the world. To put people in the prison is a representative punishment, and American use it from colony age till now, it has a very close relationship whit it’s economic, culture and the change of penalty idea, let us know its characteristic of diversified. Under the influence of innovative and the challenge American prison institutions reform and develop continuously, improve their prison legal system and management system, and take new measures to adapt the new request of the society to correct the criminals.
American has the highest rate of the population in the prison; there is one criminal in every thirty-four person in the country. By the time of 12.31, 1999, the number of prison in American is 1.983 million, and it has beyond 2 million to become the largest in the country. And the number of prisoner has occupied almost 25 percent of the entire world.
According to the statistics, 12 percent of the population in American are black, but it will be 50 percent in the jail, a lot of black in the prison are because of the drugs and smuggling, we all know that a lot Americans take drugs, but most of the drug trafficker are black, because it’s harder to find a job for them, if them can’t bear the manual labor then the only way to make a living is sell drugs. Maybe you will say they can go to school, but it is all the same there, the black is still not get the right their god have given them.
I think nobody was born to be a criminal, and nobody wants to go to jail if they can feed themselves. But it is not fair everywhere, one person cannot just complain for the unfair situation, anyone has two hands and two legs, this is fair for us expect the disability, as an “ability person”, we must do the things right, we have no reason to break the law, maybe bad things happen to you but good things happen to others, it is called fate. You cannot act as Beethoven to chock the throat of fate, then you may lose everything, the only thing you can do is to get a job and work hard so you can get something to eat later.
When people see this topic, they will say this is a waste of time, cause everyone know that American prison is a place full of violence and disease, people in there are out of their minds, they are all crazy, they kill others without blink their eyes, and someone always stir-up-trouble, if there is anything wrong, a fight is inevitable, you may say if you self-surrender every time then there will be nothing wrong, but sometimes things happened, and not like what you imagine, you can’t always be a coward. About this I can tell you, fight is a way to solve the problem between men, and there is another way, that is use your heart to treat others, you may hurt during this period, but at the end of this, you may find under your influence, people around you will be very cute, just like the movie ‘the longest yard’, the guard want to admonished a criminal because they are afraid of the prisoners’ team, the warden want to win the game by no means, but when the guard treat the boy unfairly once more, the boy obvious know that the guards want to beat him, but every time he do the work well and always smile to them, finally the guards let him go without any hurt, so what’s that mean? If one person can treat anything unfairly equally, he will success at the end.
So what I want to say is things are not like some people said, when we look at something, we can’t just see the bad aspect, if we change another angle, then it will present us the beautiful things.
The history of American prison education is very long, and also have a very long history all around the world, in this chapter I will introduce you the prison from three aspects, they are general condition of a prison, improvement of the prison and today’s American prison.
We all know that a prison was build to hold those people who broke the law, so this thing appears under some circumstance that is what I want to talk in this part. Mr. Zhang Dongping mentioned that:

Education remodeling can advance modern civilized prison's construction process and the construction of modern civilized prison opens up more space for its deep going development. In the book wrote by Dr. Zhang Hongwei it says: “The history of American criminal rights is also the change of it’s society and criminal trend to evolution of history. Generally speaking, crime correction has such some basic mode: Punishment Model, Rehabilitation Model and Justice Model. It change with the development of the society”(13).
Today’s prison is very different from the ancient prison.
It has been thousands of years since it appeared, the development of prison is with the improvement of social productivity, in the history of the human society, and there are slavery country prison, feudal society country prison, capitalist country prison and socialist country prison. Today’s prison is different, it has better situation and treatment, but people are different too, and here are two mainly things we have to deal or we will never make prison education better.
We all know that ancient prison is used for punish the slaves, its main characteristics are cruel, savage, punishment and corporal punishment, it is hard to talk about the management and punishment theory.
Generally speaking, the modern prison management and theory is start at 18th century, the ‘of Crime and Punishment’ written by Beccaria in 1764 put forward the principle of legally and the legality of humanitarian punishment, it has a significant influence to improve the prison, and since the beginning of 18th century, established the system for the center of freedom penalty. Among them the Englishman John Haward has the far-reaching influence by leading the reform of the prison. Two centuries ago, Philadelphia and Pennsylvania became the center of prison reform worldwide. To understand how this happened, one must look briefly at the early development of penal practices in William Penn colony. Penn, who himself had been confined in England for his Quaker beliefs, abolished the Duke of York severe criminal code which was in effect in other parts of British North America, where, among other offenses, the penalty of death was applied for murder, denying "the true God," homosexual acts and kidnapping. Severe physical punishments were used for what were considered lesser crimes. Pennsylvania Quaker-inspired code abolished the death penalty for all crimes except murder, using instead imprisonment with labor and fines. The law did call for severe penalties for sexual offenses: "defiling the marriage bed" was to be punished by whipping plus a one year sentence for the first offense, life imprisonment for the second.
Upon Penn death, conservative factions in the American colony and in England reintroduced many of the more sanguinary punishments. As late as 1780, punishments such as the pillory and hanging were carried out in public. An account of an execution that year related how two prisoners "were taken out amidst a crowd of spectators? They walked after a cart in which were two coffins and a ladder, etc., each had a rope about his neck and their arms tied behind them? They were both hanged in the commons of this city Philadelphia abt. [sic.] 1 o’ clock."
Jails up until the time of the American Revolution were used largely for persons awaiting trial and other punishments and for debtors and sometimes witnesses. In the Old Stone Jail at Third and Market Streets in Philadelphia, old and young, black and white, men and women were all crowded together. Here, as in other county jails in Pennsylvania at the time, it was a common custom for the jailer or sheriff to provide a bar, charging inflated prices to the prisoners for spirits. In Chester County, the English custom of charging for various other services was also in force, e.g. fees for locking and unlocking cells, food, heat, clothing, and for attaching and removing irons incident to a court appearance.
In 1776, Richard Wistar, Sr., a Quaker, had soup prepared in his home to be distributed to the inmates in Philadelphia prisons, many of whom were suffering from starvation at the time and even several deaths. Wistar formed the Philadelphia Society for Assisting Distressed Prisoners, but with the British occupation of the city the next year, the organization was disbanded.
There are two things that stop the improvement of prison education, one is the violence in the prison and the other is the disease in it, we want to get things better, then we must slove this two problems, I will talk about in the follow two parts.
Through this thesis I get something that I don’t know before, that is prison is a place that help those people did something wrong to change themselves and improve themselves, no body was born to be a criminal, and no body wants to go to jail if they can feed themselves.
