Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: The comparison between the book and the movie

Introduction

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as the initial installment of Harry Potter series, is written by the famous British author J. K. Rowling. Since its first release in the year of 1997, the book has gained increasingly popularity and acclaim worldwide with translations in more than sixty languages. Moreover, the novel was brought to big screen two years later, which easily managed to get across more audience. The essay aims to make a comparison between the book and the film on the basis of the author’s understanding of the story.

Reviews

The story revolves around the hero Harry Potter, an orphan who is placed in foster care with his aunt’s family. However, his eleventh birthday is the turning point of his life when he is told that he is actually a wizard. Afterwards, he is invited to Hogwarts, where he meets his two best friends Hermione and Ron and learns the necessary skills to live in the wizarding world. As Harry develops in his adolescence, he attempts to find out the truth of the death of his parents, and Voldemort, who is the representation of the dark and evil emerges. After a lot of trials and tribulations, Harry successfully prevents Voldemort from getting the Philosopher's Stone, and is reunited with his friends.

Undoubtedly, Rowling opens up a whole new magic world to an entire generation, where almost everything is different from the real life. The film also spares no effort to present the author’s creation. Nevertheless, the themes behind the work is never unapproachable. It first attaches much importance to friendship. Before Harry enters the school, he was so lonely in an indifferent family with little love and care. Fortunately, it’s Hogwarts where he feels the value of friendship. What’s more, Harry’s experience verifies the truth that where there is a will, there is a will. Put simply, people can not only seek enjoyments from the work, but more significantly, they can obtain some life philosophy.

Book vs. Film

It’s indeed the case that different media will give appreciators different feelings with regard to the same story, and Harry Potter in the book and film is no exception.

Language

J. K. Rolling writes in an easy and natural style, and there is a kind of pure and flexible atmosphere filling between the lines. By employing large amounts of puns, parallel and other rhetoric, her language is wit and humorous. This is quite a good news for English language learners. By contrast, the lines in the film are more straightforward and colloquial.

Character image

Rolling has created a lot of characters in the book such as Harry and Hermione. Detailed description makes these images so vivid and lively that as if they are just the boys and girls around us. However, in the film, some details are directly deleted, which weakens the expression power of the figures. For example, the book provides an access for Hermione to making logical analysis, but the movie ignores it without hesitation.

Plot

Admittedly, the book has a great length. It is precisely the huge capacity that enables readers to learn the cause and effect of the story so that they can adventure and grow together with the hero. That is to say, the book is easier to invite readers' resonance. However, in terms of the movie, due to the time limit, many plots have to be removed, threatening the completion of the story. Besides, when people watch the film, they are more like outsiders.

Conclusion

As far as I can see, the book is better than the film. If we liken the former as a full formal banquet, and then the movie just stands for a quick meal. However, the film is not good for nothing. It offers visual feasts by using digital special effects which cannot be matched by the book. To sum up, Harry Potter is an excellent work that deserves well reading and watching.
