Along with the drastic development of Internet, traditional media got a big hit in this information ego, making its decrement in circulation and sponsors of advertisement. New media, including Internet media, Social media and Smartphone, currently plays a primary role in leading the mass communication industry. The keen competition between traditional media and new media results the fact that those two media largely concentrate on the speed of launching information. Hence, it would lead to the appearance of fake or inauthentic news.
In comparison with the past time, which is an ego that people was passively ready to accept whatever information, common people now can be initiative in sending information out. Audiences, who are the main offerees in the communication industry, also serve as a key participator in resulting the issue of fake news. In face, it is understandable that audiences do not have the specific tool, technique, or criteria to review, examine or attest the authenticity of the information. This condition becomes the other reason of fake news’ existence and population.
Overall, the prosperous development of mass communication, especially the new media should pave way to the occurrence of fake or inauthentic news, when taking the two reasons into considerations. The first one is the drastic competition between traditional media and new media. And the second one is the changing role of audience from offeree to offeror.
Analysis分析
On one hand, for traditional media, referring directly to newspaper, in the past they served as a platform of providing audiences certain authentic, true and deep news. Alternatively, at the present time, they cannot simply offer audiences with these types of news, but also news of freshness and catching eyes. It is really tough for journalists in the newspaper industry to find out the fresh and interesting news every single day. Hence, fake news emerged as the times required. Taking Chinese newspaper environment as an instance to explain, increasing amounts of Chinese journalists tried to create those amusing and appealing news to get concerns from the audiences (China Real Time 2014). However, it is not reasonable that everyday they can obtain that type of news and edit them to the public. In the Chinese newspaper industry, the quantity of fake news is increasing annually, which is a result from the big threat from new media, such as Internet and Smartphone.
In addition, for new media, they currently also get an intense internal competition between Internet media and Social media, such as smartphone. In the process of racing, they all take convenience as their main advantage, leading to the fact that they all lack of considering about the depth and authenticity of news. The more concerns they put on convenience, the less deep and true news they can offer to audiences. Furthermore, under the great growth of high-tech, smartphone is becoming to lead the high-tech industry and affecting people’s daily life very much. People can get a piece of news immediately, which might be just happened a second ago. But the disadvantage of Social media did come from its extremely fast speed. Since they launch the news as soon as they can, they did get little time to review the news, including its source, authenticity and depth. So therefore, they cannot ensure the realness of the information they offered online, so that fake news or inauthentic news appeared.
On the other hand, for the audiences, in the previous times, they were passively ready to accept different types and sources of news, which were provided by traditional media. Compared with the past, presently audiences are playing the roles of being offerors or agents in delivering, spreading and providing news or information. However, audiences cannot filter the news from board to narrow, or examine from rough to intense. Their participation in the communication industry actually facilitates the worse cycle of spreading fake or inauthentic news. Taking a famous case in South Korea to demonstrate the consequence of audience being an offeror, Korean famous actress Choi Jin Sil suicide after she got a malicious slander online for quite a long time (Veale. 2008). This tragedy was a product of irresponsibility in spreading inauthentic news or information online or on social media. Since the population of Internet and social media cannot be underestimated, audiences should take the duty of correctly spread news out. From this example, audience, currently also serving as an agent in communication industry, is another participator of aggravating the occurrence of fake or inauthentic news.
