Backgrounds  With the deepening of promoting the use of English language in the world for several years,more and more non-English speaking people are preparing to present their latest findings on the main-trend international English journals,especially for those Chinese scholars who eager to present themselves on the world stages.However,through the researches pertaining to international English journal papers,it is found that the possibility of publishing international articles by Chinese English writers still has a long way to go is compared with that of international English writers.

One obvious reason is language, which is a big obstacle for them.Hence,how to express their new ideas or findings accurately and succinctly in English is a thing of the first importance(Quirk,1962). Signaling nouns is a kind of Abstract nouns which could function as cohesive devices in constructing discourse.If use well when writing，it could be helpful to fulfill and reach the purpose of constructing a concise and coherent discourse.

Since 1970s,numerous studies have been done on the signaling nouns.Most of previous researchers mainly focus on constructing the theory of signaling nouns in terms of definitions,functions and patterns.Seldom studies have been conducted to investigate this phenomenon by means of contrastive studies,let alone a corpus-based method.

These phenomena about signaling nouns among English writings are noticed by Halliday&Hasan(1976)that a group of abstract nouns which exists between grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.They term the group of these nouns as “general nouns”and make a classification according to their probable functions and forms.

After that,scholars are starting to show more interests in signaling nouns.With regard to previous studies abroad,Many researches term these nouns as following:Winter(1977) “type 3 vocabulary”,Bolinger(1977)“low-content nouns”,Levinson(1983)“discourse deixis”,Francis(1986,1998)“anaphoric nouns”,Ivanic(1991)“carrier nouns”,Tadros (1994)“enumerative nouns”,Hinkel(2001,2004)“catch-all nouns”,Ma Pilar Mur Duenas(2003,2004)“retrospective labels”,Schmid(2000)“shell nouns”.When studies  come to at home,most researchers use the terms introduced by oversea scholars,only two persons introduce two new terms which are similar to signaling nouns.They are Zhang(2002)“semi-content words”and Tang(2006)“packet nouns”.
