2.2 Studies on China-related reports
2.3 Studies on related reports in western media.
3.0 Theoretical Framework
4.0 Critical analysis of the text
4.0 Conclusion
Based on the analysis of the news samples from the American mainstream media and the findings of the research, it is proved that the news discourse on Expo 2010 Shanghai is ideology-carrying and the reports are by no means objective. Some implications are obtained from this study:
Firstly, CDA offers a new perspective for the study of the Expo---the big event with international influence held in Shanghai, China. Through the critical analysis of the linguistic features and structures, the hidden ideologies which manipulate the readers’ perception are explored. The findings discussed above confirm the feasibility and rationality CDA as theoretical methodology in providing effective analytical instruments for exploring and explaining the underlying ideologies of the news discourse.
Secondly, interpreting the news discourse with the assistance of the framework of CDA can help the readers to discover the real intentions and values hiding behind the language. But if the readers don’t have the critical awareness, they will accept and agree to whatever the news says. Particularly when reading the reports of foreign media, because of different politics, cultures and value systems, some of the news will be reported in a distorted and biased way, readers in this case should keep alert and critically accept or refuse some expressions and remarks. Therefore, to cultivate people’s critical reading awareness is of great significance.
