STUDENT CONFERENCE REFLECTIVE REPORT
“Sustainability in tough economic times” was the main them of Annual MBA student business conference of University of Greenwich Business school. All students of MBA including parttime and full time and teachers of the university were the participants of this conference. In addition, local business community and social representative attended in this two days conference at Quine Anne building in Maritime Greenwich campus from 5th to 6th March 2010.The Head of Business School Mr. Les Johnson inaugrated the conference with his valuable speech regarding econmic downdurn of current world and discussed the possible reasons behind this situation and how to overcome or face this to protect the business from any loss or failure.
The financial ( Lall et al,2008) turmoil that began in the summer of 2007 has mutated into a full-blown crisis in several advanced economics like Australia, UK, USA and so on.Starting this downturn collapsed the all business sector of the world and continuing as recessision . Survival at this tough econmic time is the main factor for the business people, economist and general people. Every people have affected by this recession and lost their financial capabilities to extend the further business even destroyed the full business. How we should face this situation and do business in a compettitive envirionment that means sustainability is the main questions and develop a sound economy for better future of the world. In a exclusive interview with Guardian, Chancellor Darling ( 2008) expressed that Britain is facing the worst economic downturn in 60 years which will be 'more profound and long-lasting' than people had expected. Exactly, the recession is still running and no good forecast of recovery or good condition.
Diagram. Presentation grouping as per subject developed by author.Except organising committee of students all student presented their mandatory conference presentation individually or in a group. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN.
Development is a continuous process. Full (Avolio,1998) leadership development works to ehance the individual and collective force in groups and organisation which represent as vital force for making ideal relationship with their followers or peers or both.
The Leader Development Process Model of McCauley & Velsor (2004) shows that leader development is a process which required both the variety of development experience and ability to learn. Above the circumstrnces and the basic components of leadershp traits () I had prepared the below five Point action plan as leadership development plan:
Team (Teamtechnology,2010) dynamics are the unseen forces that operate in a team between different people or groups which strongly influence the members to react, perform or behave in a complex situation. The approach of a team member or leader can inspire to do such activities that will build good working environment and speed for performing better.Teamwork(Kakabadse, et al.,2005) is essential to managing in organisations, to increase productivity, efficiency, motivation, job satisfaction, creativity and customer responsiveness.Team member (Chou, et al.,2008) effectiveness can be behavioural which includes team member performance cityzenship, behaviour, creativity, and so on also attitudinal effectiveness refers to psychological factors like satisfaction and commitment. Idea may come individually but implementing this idea is required a team work and need to create a force to complete the work timely and economically.
Team dynamics helped to complete the monthly food distribution of a not for profit organisation where i worked as a team member. We identofied that collaboration and sharing our activities may extend our hands to the beneficiary timely and monthly. In every month, we have to manage 200 food distribution points (FDPs) but it was impossible to complete the delivery monthly. That is true that every month we are supplying commodity for more than 100 points but this is the delivery of combination of previous and present month. It created a great problem in every chain from warehouse to the head quarter especially in reporting. As a group member of this operation, I called a meeting with Warehouse Managers, Commodity Accounting Officers and all food monitors of three districts for solving these problems.
We understood that same work is going on but not in same month. It is a bad image of our region and need to make a plan to reduce the time of distribution. How it is possible and overcome. Commodity manager is responsible for every district and there was a discrimination of beneficiary like one district is controlling only 29 FDP but another one is 105 FDPs. So, one can help another after his distribution. Main problem is finalization of beneficiary list because we have to take various approval signatures from different department. We called another meeting with them and addressed the problems and seek assistance from them for any positive solution. They expressed that time is a big factor but possible. We had to start the selection process before the month and complete the selection within the first week of the months.
We committed to solve the problems and this month we will finish all distributions along with balance distribution of previous month. At last, we succeed in this operation. Whole team worked properly and helped each other. Now-a-days, we are distributing 100 % in every month and there is no problem in reporting and other administrating problems. Each member shared their problems and took help without any confusion or don't think others like attitude problems.
Team (Chou, et al.,2008) work means achiving synergy to get the greater output than the sum of its parts. This dynamics may bring worthful for reaching the program goal and objectives.Now-a-days, success of any works depends on the team work. Somebody referes the activities done by a team like “ Its a team work” or “ We are in a team”. So ,getting the best output in a work team dynamics is very important also exposing the team work.
PERSONAL EPISODE-ROTTERDAM RULE
The UN (Rotterdamrules2009, 2009) General Assembly adopted the “United Nations Convention Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea” at Rotterdam in December 2008 which will extend and modernise the existing international rules relating to the contract of maritime carriage of goods. In addition, the Rotterdam Rules were prepared in intergovernmental negotiations from 2002 to 2009 by the United Nations Commission for International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), while the Comité Maritime International (CMI) had completed preparatory work on the Convention at the request of UNCITRAL, including the creation of a preliminary draft of the text.
The London Universities Maritime Law and Policy Research Group (Formated by London Metropolitan University, University of Greenwich and University of Westminster) organised a public seminer on “ The Rotterdam Rules-An overview and a comparoson with the existing regimes” by Mr Stuart Beare at Goulston street campus of London Metropolitan University on 6 PM/24th March 2010. Prof.Sarah Palmer and some students including me attented the seminer on behalf of University of Greenwich. As a maritime MBA student this seminar was very important for me because Rotterdam rule is the latest maitime convention of shipping industry. Mr. Stuart Beare was the chairman of the CMI International Sub committee on issues of transport law and attended all of thirteen sessions of UNCITRAL working group for making this rules also the final approval session of UN General Assembly.
The seminer organised as a regular seminer of reserach group and they bought the latest convention which is strategically importatnt for maritime people specillay who are involving in logistics and shipping sector. The seminer inaugrated by Susan Hawker on behalf of research group and London Metropolitan University. After that excellent presentation performed by Mr Stuart Beare regarding the new rules and its comparison with the existing rules of carriage of good by sea. In addition, question & answer session leaded by Susan Hawkar. Finally, closing drink and informal discussion session continued up to 10 PM by the participants at the cafe of University.
The Hague (OECD,2010) Rules of 1924 represented the first attempt by the international community for caring the goods by sea which also derived form the basis of national legislation in almost all of the world's major trading nations, and probably cover more than 90 per cent of world trade. The Convention ( UNCITRAL,2008) developed as modern alternative of maritime transportation extended to others mode of transport like road, air, river etc which linked to, earlier conventions relating to the international carriage of goods by sea, in particular, the International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules of Law relating to Bills of Lading (Brussels, 25 August 1924) ('the Hague Rules'), and its Protocols ('the Hague-Visby Rules'), and the United Nations Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea (Hamburg, 31 March 1978) ('the Hamburg Rules').
The preamble ( Beare,2010) to the resolution express concern that the current regime lacks uniformity and fails adequately to take into account modern transport practices where the new rules update the provision contained in the existing regimes with particular reference to their scope of application, the obligation and liability of the carrier, the obligation of the shipper to the carrier and transport documents with regards to door-to-door transport contracts, electrnic transport records and containerisation. The rule is highly crticised by the maritime lawer, european union and others and only 21 countries preliminary signed ( UNCITRAL,2009) the convention. In a study, Tetley ( 2008) argued that it has limited scope of work, complexity in three types of transport documents and others. He strongly believe and recommended that the rules be opposed and neither signed or adopted and return to the working committee for revision.
However, this seminar gave a scope of learning about the carriage of goods by sea from the begining to the latest convention. I think it will help me to work in maritime sector effectively and following international transport rules.
