1. An Overview of the Service Learning Project

1.1 An Introduction of Legal Environment in the US

In the US, the charge of legal services ranks the top in the world. With expensive legal services charges lead to the failure of low-income American citizens to protect themselves.

First, in the US, it is estimated that hiring a layer costs an average of US$2000, which is a heavy financial burden to the low-income group. The high commission makes them live in an unfair and injustice situation. The pressurizing living environment may result in a hatred to the society. Furthermore, it could be a blasting fuse to the society.

Second, the lawsuit itself is quite complicated which requires much energy from the accuser side. In order to file a lawsuit, relevant evidences and documents must be collected and analyzed before the trial. On top of that, rounds of trials are waiting ahead. The complicated lawsuit procedures devour the time and the energy of the involvers.

Third, to close a lawsuit often requires a large amount of time. The procedure to close a lawsuit is time-consuming which often puts the plaintiffs in dilemma. No matter giving up or carrying on the lawsuit, the disadvantageous group suffer a significant loss.

Owing to this, the less privileged people in the US are facing a challenge when they meet unfair and injustice treatment in the society. The limit energy, finance and time makes them hesitate when their legitimate rights are violated. If this phenomenon continues, the maltreated social class might engage in vandalism or commit minor crimes to disturb the social stability. To protect the less privileged group, Bayview/Hunter Point Community was established with the purpose of solving injustice. Through ensuring access to legal service, the needy people can be helped out from the legal disputes.

1.2 An Introduction of Bayview/Hunters Point Community

To achieve the goal of spreading the justice to the needy group, Bayview/Hunters Point Community was established. Through fundraising activities, constant financial support could be guaranteed to protect the legitimate rights of less privileged people.

In order to conduct our service learning project, a common decision was achieved to engage in the social work conducted by Bayview/Hunters Point Community by our group members. In the hope of helping people who are facing unfair social treatment and seeking for social justice, we take part in the fundraising events hold by the Community.

To achieve the goal of contributing to the society, first we meet Tiffany and Adrian who are the community service partner. Through their introduction, we are aware of the mission of Bayview/Hunters Point Community which is to provide legal assistance to the needy. To operate this project, fundraising activities are their primary source of their financial reserve.

1.3 The Service Learning Project

According to Cress, to facilitate the combination of in-classroom learning and the real world outside, a Learning-through-Serving model is proposed. In this model, learning is accomplished through integrating the academic content and the community experience. In this case, students and teachers both involve in the knowledge acquisition process. Walking the academic content allows the students having a deep and comprehensive understanding over the community service. Their bias, misconception and stereotype of the society can be altered.

Adopting this model, we are advised to engage in the community work to further understand the public management.

2. The Analysis of the Group Work

Our team is consisted of Jie, Jiajian, William and Jiahao. In the team, we worked together closely to strive for our common goal, meanwhile, we also established a strong connection and tacit agreement during this project.

2.1 Team Member Competencies

To establish a friendly working team, we applied Team Member Competencies in the project. According to Roussau, Aube and Savoie, Team Member Competencies falls into five categories: cooperating, coordinating, communicating, comforting, and conflict resolving. These five aspects are interdependent rather than independent.

Since the beginning of the project, team member shares resources they own by themselves to broaden the horizon of the team, meanwhile, sharing resources can accommodate others. To work at a concerted pace, team members align their individual work with other teammates. In this way, the project could be kept on the track all the time. During the process, communicating is an unavoidable step. To facilitate the health development of the project, on a regular basis, we share information and individual working progress with other members freely, efficiently, and respectfully. Through in-time information sharing, the team could keep a unified pace in the work. Outside of efficient communication, team members also should have the ability to listen actively, instead of arguing fiercely with others. Being a good listener allows more information sharing among the team members and provides references for next step work. Comforting is a team members relation bonding step. It often happens when the team spirit is not high. When we encounter obstacles in gathering donations, teammates comforted the depressed ones to cheer them up. Through showing empathy and comforting, the depressed members could regain confidence to carry on the project. In the realization of the project, conflicts and issues can not be avoided. Therefore conflict resolving becomes a competency among the tem members. When issues emerged, our members succeed in diagnosing the conflict sources and figured out the best conflict handling styles.

2.2 Forming-Storming-Norming-Performing Model

To develop our team, we adopted the Forming-Storming-Norming–Performing model to facilitate the work which influence the moral and mental world among the team members. Before the service learning project starts, we organized meetings and conversations to discover our expectations to the project. To work with one heart, the value of the membership was agreed by team members. At the same time, the existing authority was deferred and the boundaries of the behavior is regulated to make the tasks clearly assigned. After the team forming, we encountered some conflicts among the team members. In order to rhythm the working pace, we exchanged ideas over the project to identify the potential interpersonal conflicts. Through discussions over the conflicts, every member found their right role in the team. Being allocated in the suitable positions, every member proposed their opinions and ideas which exerted influence on the goals of the project and the means to realize the aim. To better achieve the goal, behavioral norms were established. To move smoothly ahead, each team member confirmed their role and reached an agreement on the team objective. We developed out own tem mental models to improve the cohesion. After all the preparation from the mental level, we started to perform the task, every team member committed to the task and coordinated and cooperated with each other on the basis of trust. When the conflicts came up, we were able to resolve the conflicts with the collective strength.

2.3 Influence Tactics

Working this project, we were required to gather as many as donations to raise the most funds as possible. How to influence people and persuade them to donate became the key of the successful fundraising events. In this case, the influence tactics was fully applied in our field work.

Influence tactics is comprised of eight aspects: silent authority, assertive, information control, coalition formation, upward appeal, ingratiation, persuasion, exchange. Integrating these eight aspects makes a powerful influence strategy.

When we first went to collect donation, we told business people in local stores that we were working for Bayview/Hunters Point Community, which is a community of good reputation. They were told that we were doing community work to raise funds from the unfair treated people. After the dominating introduction, a silent authority was established in the following conversation.

Owing to the imbalance of information, for the purpose of changing their attitudes and behaviors we further manipulated the information through telling them how supportive and cooperative other donators are. Considering of their supportive counterparts, the donators were willing to donate thanks to the herd effect.

In the donation-gathering process, we also adopted credible figures and facts, and legal knowledge as well to convince the target people. In addition, we adopted an empathy strategy to lead them to think in the shoes of the less-privileged population. In this way, an emotional pressure was successfully exerted on the donators. Furthermore, we told the donators that their kind donations could bring positive influence to other people’s life and meanwhile, their decent behavior would be respected by the community.

Through a well-designed influence strategy adapted from the course, we successfully collect donations for the fundraising events.

2.4 The Multidimensional Competency

Our team members and the donators are from different countries and origins. Regarding the different cultures and backgrounds, a global mindset has to be set among all team members.

The multidimensional competency is the ability to perceive, know about, process information across cultures which puts the difficulty of achieving this project to a higher level.

In general, the multidimensional competency includes the following aspects: an awareness, openness to, respect for other views and practices in the world; a capacity to empathize and act effectively across cultures; an ability to process complex information about novel environments; the ability to comprehend and reconcile intercultural matters with multiple levels of thinking.

No matter in the team meetings or during the donation work, we were open and respected to different ideas and practices from different sides, although some might sound ridiculous. Bearing the awareness of culture differences, we negotiated everything on the basis of mutual trust and a good wish.

After detecting the differences among different parties, we were actively adjusting the behaviors accordingly to meet our shared target. However, even we are upgrading our team force, new issues still came up. Through collective strength and mind, we strived for the set target and overcame the difficulties. Combing these four abilities of building a global mindset, we were able to work flexible toward our target and gained the final success.

3. What We acquire from the Service Learning Project

To accomplish the goal of offering social assistance to the under-privileged population, we brainstorm together to make the decision on serving at Bayview/Hunters Point Community. During this process, we communicate with each other regularly on the community service to discuss the existing and emerging issues. When thinking of the people who are treated unfairly, we are motivated to gather as many donations as possible to help them out. Meanwhile, from the perspectives of community, the project and individual, we better understand the course content through field work.

On one hand, offering legal accesses to the population who are struggling at the threshold of poverty could have a fair and justice treatment in the society. In this way, the number of people who are engaging in the illegal activities can be significantly reduced. At the same time, it could largely reduced the cost of police presence. Decreased police force contributes to the local financial situation. Although a great effort from society has to be made to improve the conditions, a virtuous cycle could be formed then to facilitate the healthy development of the society at large.

On the other hand, out team worked closely together. When we made this decision, we made a thorough schedule based on the future progress of the community service. Basically we conducted our social services according to the schedule. During the process, we also assigned the tasks to the person who are good at it. When new issues came in, we negotiate the issues on a democratic basis. The optimized teamwork framework contributed to the success of this service learning project.

Furthermore, during this process, I learned how to organize and conduct social events to help the needy population. During the service learning project, I learned to combine the theory with the practice. Working in a team, I enhanced my skills in the leadership and confliction management and resolve. Working for the community also aroused my interest in fighting for the voiceless group which greatly cultivated my social responsibility. Setting foot in the dilemma the suppressed people facing gave me a deeper understanding over the social and political issues in the society and the local community. Communicating with and cooperating with people from different social backgrounds also provided me a valuable opportunity to observe and experience the diversity.

Although the whole project is not an easy task for Chinese students due to the instinct shyness in nature, I successfully overcame the inner obstacles and communicated with local business people and other stakeholders. At the same time, as an international student, I learned how to communicate with people from different social classes and backgrounds, and further understood the social and political issues in the society. Through my efforts, I believe I can make a difference in the society and the community. Embracing this challenge fills me with great pleasure due to my contribution. Therefore, it is a great success and stride for myself as well.
