Alice Ann Munro is a Canadian author, whose works are considered to change traditional novels. It is said that events in her fictions happened in her hometown located in Huron County of southwestern Ontario and those fictions often explored human complexities in a simple prose style.

Influences that shaped her into a writer

After marrying with James Munro, Alice Ann and her husband moved to Dundarave. In 1963, the couple settled down in Victoria and opened a bookstore named Munro's Books that is still on operation. Unfortunately, in 1972, Alice broke up with James Munro. Later on, she went back to Ontario and began her writing career. Due to have keen insight into life, Alice discovered that many females were under great depression, especially in their marriage life. Therefore, in her writing career, she mainly focused on exploration of human life, which was based on the setting in her native Huron Country in southwestern Ontario.

The impact of her works on audiences

Due to traditional family structure, the female characters in Alice’s works were obedient, weak in personality, which made them unable to get independence in their soul and economy, and keep away from violence from their husbands. However, thanks to Alice’s works, people gradually realized the social evils, especially females. Inspired by her works, the social attitude toward the family violence changed from acquiescence to interference, and then established a complete system to protect females’ right in their marriage life. With the positive impacts, females raised their awareness to be independent both in their personality and economy. And people also were aware of the fact that males who imposed violence on their wife were bad in their moral, which was no longer considered as masculinity. In a word, Alice’s novels portrayed a process that females were under depression firstly and then pursued independence.

Besides, her works also informed people about the positive impacts of feminist movement. In a nutshell, Allice's novels reflected her concern for the survival of the individuals across the nation, and exploration of human psychological demands and complexity of human nature.

Alice’s philosophy of what writing and literature does

Following after the writing philosophy of psychological realism, Alice, by describing the psychological activities vividly and objectively, reflected the whole national spirits of the times. Under this philosophy, she looked into the deep motion of people, which echoed to her concern for the survival of the individuals. The ultimate goal of her was to display the social situation and people’s inner rationality by depicting the desires and conflicts of her characters.

Alice’s preferred styles and themes

In her early works, Alice often described a girl coming of age who got into trouble in her future marriage and her family. In recent works such as Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage and Runaway, she has changed her focus to depict the life of females at the middle age. It is her style that gradually showed the changes of her characters’ life and then revealed complexity of human nature.

During the writing process, she paid attention to the vivid description of the psychological activities and revelation of the inner world of her characters.

To achieve the above effects, she reasonably combined tones of satire with solemn, and tones of shrill with happy outrage. In her novels, we can see that her style is a wonderful combination of fantasy and ordinary, which displayed the life vividly.

My own reaction to the author’s writing style and themes

After research, I have learned something about the author’s writing style and themes. Her fiction often explored human complexities in a simple prose style. In her works, she showed great concern for grabbing the subtle changes of characters’ psychological status, aiming at exploration of human psychological demands and complexity of human nature. From this point, she was a great psychologist. As previously stated, her themes focused on the females’ personal life, which made females to realize the need to be independent and raise the social awareness to protect females from violence. And people also realized that males who imposed violence on their wife were bad in their moral. In a word, Alice’s novels portrayed a process that females changed from being weak and dependent in their life to being brave to pursued independence and their human rights. She made great contribution to feminism. To conclude, she was brave to reveal the evils in the society and bring rationality and to people’s life. From my point of view, she was the lighthouse of writers all over the world due to the fact that she dedicated herself to save other people’s life with a pen.

Homage

In this section, I would like to choose the form of memoir to pay tributes to my favorite writer---Bliss Carman. In the following, I plan to describe the writer’s theme, style and famous works from the view of first person “I”. I think it is a good way to shorten the distance with my readers as well as to make what I write actual.

At the beginning of my writing career, there were several people that influenced me a lot. The first one is my headmaster at the Collegiate School. He influenced me a lot in literature and led me to pursue the heaven of literature. During my school days, the headmaster introduced me to the poetry of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Algernon Charles Swinburne. In 1879, my first work was published in the UNB Monthly. The second person is Sappho. At the beginning, I learned a lot from Sappho’s works. Later on, my writing achieved great progress and I won more and more fans. The third person I should thank is Mary Perry King. When I encountered barriers, she always stood beside me and encouraged me to believe in myself. She also helped me in my economy. At the beginning, I seldom got profits from my poetries. She gave me food and clothes. I was so moved and kept going on my writing career.

I think, as a writer, I have the responsibilities to do something for the world. At that time, people were under great stress brought about by urban modernization. They suffered a lot in their psychology and physiology. During my writing, I advocated the philosophy---“unitrinianism” which drew on the theories of François-Alexandre-Nicolas-Chéri Delsarte. This philosophy encouraged people to follow their hearts and purse their love for freedom. In 1894, I collaborating with Hovey for the first time, wrote a poetry named Songs of Vagabondia and published it in Copeland & Day. To my excitement, the work achieved great positive acclamation among people, especially among the young. Since then, they began to have concern for their personal freedom, and hate the materialism that destroyed the harmonious status of their body and mind. It was one of the most successful works due to its positive social effects.

I hope a new generation of writer will do a bit for the whole world in the coming years.

Reflection

Firstly, I would like to share the difficulties that I encountered in the writing process. The most difficult thing was the preparation of the writing: searching on the Internet and get suitable information. When searching on the Internet, I had the feeling that I was buried on the information flood. The second difficult section was to choose a suitable form to write the homage task. At the beginning, I decided to choose the form of poem to pay tributes to my favorite writer. However, when I began to write, I found out it was too difficult for me to write in this form. After a full-round thinking, I decided  to take the form of memoir from the view of the first person “I”. I believed that it not only made my writing actual, but also shortened the distance between me and my audiences. However, I also benefited from the writing task. During the writing process, my writing skills had been improved. At the same time, the writing task also exercised my patience.-M
