This paper tried to answer the question: Are ultra-compact dwarf galaxys extremely massive star clusters, or are they the nuclei of galaxies that have had their outer layers stripped off through gravitational interactions with other galaxies? Whether etstripped galaxy nuclei harbour supermassive black holes and are therefore stripped galaxy nuclei. The underlying scientific motivation: Seth and colleagues’ discovery is an important step towards understanding the nature of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. Many other ultra-compact dwarfs show tantalizing hints that they, too, harbour supermassive black holes and are therefore stripped galaxy nuclei, but direct evidence is lacking. The authors are participating in ongoing observing programmes that may provide conclusive evidence for supermassive black holes in four
other ultra-compact dwarfs.
The authors already answered this question, Seth et al.‘weighed’ the black hole by
determining its gravitational influence on nearby stars orbiting it. To explain the observed stellar velocities and the distribution of light within M60-UCD1, they had to invoke the presence of a central black hole with a mass 21 million times that of our Sun. A black hole of that size would be expected to reside in a host galaxy with a mass of about 7 billion solar masses.
However, at the same time, new problem raised. The evidence for a supermassive black
hole in M60-UCD1 is strong, but it is not the only possible explanation for thedata. Although seemingly unlikely, we cannot definitively rule out the existence of a population of low-mass stars or dead stellar remnants at the galaxy’s centre that do not produce much visible light. An X-ray source that might be produced by a supermassive black hole has been detected at the heart of M60-UCD1, but this radiation could also be generated by the dead remnant of a star.
The most interesting is that: how did such a big black hole get into such a tiny galaxy?
Also, the calculation and theory in this paper makes me confused. It is difficult for me to understand.
2.Press coverage
These press releases are written according to the release of Detection of a Supermassive Black Hole in an Ultra-compact Dwarf Galaxy with some exaggerations which also ignore the quite difficult calculations and theories which the public also don’t understand, and giving the analogies when writing.
I can see a lot of particularly effective phrases, analogies, images, or illustrations in the press releases which i think help the audience understand.
The press releases choose to focus on this subtopic from this paper: This suggests that there may be many more supermassive black holes that we have missed, and tells us more about the formation of these incredibly dense galaxies. They don’t show the limitation and new questions raised from this paper because the press release should not be so rigorous.
In my opinion, I think i would write the press release in a little different way, telling the truth and show the facts. I think it is the responsibility of the press.
The amount of contents in which news coverage write their own interpretation versus simply transcribe portions of the press releases is about 50 percentage.
The new coverage add subtopics or graphics from the press releases as we can see from the report and subtract some confusing graphs.
I think if a reader read the press news coverage, it is easier for him or her to get the most important information compared to academic paper because the press choose information which the public show interest in, however, he or she also tend to be mislead or ignore some important hypothesis or prerequisite or limitation in the original paper. In a word, the press news coverage is more understandable but less accurate and rigorous than the academic paper.
