Introduction

It is known to us that different people may have different religious beliefs and they have the freedom to choose their religious beliefs nowadays. However, the conditions are different in the colonial period and there are religious conflicts during that period. Decades of enduring conflict and various horrible religious wars occur all over the world. Some of the major religious conflicts in the colonial period include discrimination, ethnic and racial conflict, intolerance, persecution, religious violence, etc. As a matter of fact, these major religious conflicts in the colonial period made the United States a country of unmatched religious diversity.

Religious Conflicts in the Colonial Period

In the part titled Religious Life in the British Colonies: 1620-1700, Maryland had an act of religious tolerance in 16491 and it decided to tolerate the treatment they received in the first beginning without taking any regard of all different kinds of religious conflicts they received, like discrimination, ethnic and racial conflict, intolerance, persecution, religious violence and so on. However, the treatment they received was so terrible that it was hard for them to stand anymore because they were enslaved and even persecuted3, leading to the Puritan’s errand into the wilderness in the due time. Later in the following part Awakening and Revolution: 1730-1790, the Americans chose to rebel and many of them awakened from their past tolerance. The more concrete case is that Jonathan Edward described the great awakening in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1738, Benjamin Franklin explained his religious views in a letter in 1756, Jonathan Boucher’s loyalist sermon denounces the revolution in 1775, John Witherspoon preaches the Revolutionary war at God’s test to sinners in 1776, Anthony Benezet denounced war in 1776, Isaac Jackson protested persecution in 17772. All these are the progress that the Americans had made toward rebelling against the religious conflict.

It is obvious that a lot of issues had taken place and the most important moment is when Thomas Jefferson established religious freedom in Virginia in 17862. Until this moment, they realized their goal of “setting up their own opinions and modes of thinking as the only true and infallible”, which could clearly indicate that the Americans had finally reached freedom and independence in choosing their religion.

As for the Americans, the revolution was not only a war for political independence but also the protection of religious diversity of the thirteen colonies. Or maybe it can be put in another way that the revolution was actually a war for religious freedom and independence. The revolution of the United States stimulated new religious movements and it was right the American’s waging the war against the British that enabled them to prevent from being ruled any longer. It can be understood in this way that the Church of England would like to impose a uniform Anglican religion for all the thirteen colonies while the United States held that all the different religions of all the thirteen colonies could coexist with one another. So a fair knowledge can be obtained that the religious conflict is between various American religious denominations and the Church of England while only the United States chose to stand out and waged a war against the British.

Conclusion

To sum up, a reasonable conclusion can be drawn that there are really many manifestations of religious conflicts in the colonial period, which has turned the United States into a nation that is religiously diverse. Based on this, it is not hard to find that it is Americans’ waging war against the British that enables it to get freedom in religion in the end.
