Communication disorders happen mostly with the dysfunction of hearing and speaking abilities, since most people communication through listening and speaking. The occurrence of communication in children must raise special attention of the parents, since children are going through important phases of learning to interact with the world. The influence of communication disorder in the early childhood may have negative impacts over the entire course of life. According to research in the occurrence of communication disorder, the highest chance for it to happen is in the pre-school ages. Children two years of age has a probability of 17% to have communication disorder. Reaching the age of 3, the percentage drops significantly, from 17% to 4%~7.5%. This rate of occurrence further decreases to 3%~6% at the age of six (Allen, Rapin, & Wiznitzer, 1988). This shows that most of the cases of communication disorder have been effectively resolved. This also demonstrates the effectiveness and importance of early identification and intervention, since communication disorder is easier to treat when identified earlier.
The reason for choosing the topic of child communication disorder is simply because this is something relevant to the course content, and communication disorder is an important issue for parents to be aware of. The target audience of the infographic is the parents with new born babies. It is important for them to learn about the basics of communication disorder, so that they can identify the potential difficulties in their children and provide help in time. This is more about increasing the public awareness on the issue, since the lack of awareness may result in the suffering and social isolation of children for their entire life. The infographic is composed of three parts. The first part applies data from research to show the chance of occurrence of communication disorder. The sharp contrast between 2-years old and older age groups show that the earlier the intervention happens, the better the effects would be.
There are multiple causes to trigger communication disorder. Most children begin to develop linguistic abilities at the age of 12 to 18 months. Several reasons can cause the delay and interference of this process. Among these reasons, physical causes are easier to identify and treat. Child hearing disabilities and articulation disorders are the typical physical cases of communication disorder. Hearing disabilities refers to the loss of sound detection abilities of over 30dB (Sininger, Grimes, & Christensen, 2010). It can also be triggered by diseases such as continuous high fever. Articulation disorders refers to the underdevelopment, or the improper formation of the necessary organs to make sound. Speaking is actually highly dependent on hearing. Therefore, many cases of articulation disorder and hearing disabilities are interconnected. There is also the problem of stammering. Repetition and extension of sounds are normal phenomena in the early phases of language development. Parents should not exert excessive amount of attention on the children in this phase. Training will also help to prevention child stammering from developing into adult stammering.
In addition to the physical causes, there are also the cerebral and psychological ones. Language retardation and Autism are two such causes of child communication disorder. The origins of these disorders can be mental retardation, specific language impartment, behavior disorder, learning disorder, and environmental factors (Mattison, Cantwell, & Baker, 1980). In the formation of Autism alone, there can be genetic and environmental influences. Overall, child communication disorder usually has complex causes, requiring not only a systematic way of prevention, diagnosis and treatment, but also increased social awareness and support. Early training programs targeting children from the age of 2 to 6 is necessary, to help children with communication disorder. By promoting the communication abilities of children, the negative influences will be minimized, over the later learning abilities, psychological health, and cognitive abilities development.
