“Barbershop: The Next Cut” is a film in 2016. It tells a story about a man who runs a barbershop with his friends in the Southside of Chicago. Besides the daily operation of the barbershop, he is trying to save his families and neighborhoods from violence conflict from gangs around his hometown. The “Barbershop” is not so much a comedy as a documentary film. Although the director puts a lot of jokes and funny elements in the film, its core is to reveal the real- world daily life of people who live in Southside of Chicago. According to the statistic conducted by Jeremy Gorner (2017), at the middle of the year of 2017, 323 people have been killed by shooting and murdered in Chicago. At the end of this year estimatingly there will be more than 700 homicides caused by gang’s conflictions which is the highest mark during the past two decades. If we let the issue keep going without any action, there will be a massive lose of young lives and the panic will continuously strike in the city. To prevent this from happening, the GRASP and BUILD dope out abundant schemes for gang rescue.

Solution 1

The GRASP was primarily run by ex-gang members who escaped from the gang-life style and lived a normal life in the rest of their life. Base on this superiority, GRASP gives out a solution named “GRASP Enterprises” that already has been running over 24 years. Cisco Gallardo and Johnnie Williams, who have experienced gang life, brought out this program aiming to provide job opportunities for those young gang members for over 20 years. The statistic from CBI shows that there are over 12000 gang members in Colorado and 8000 in Denver Metro Area. If they just easily flee from the gang and compete with other young people who live a normal life, they hardly have a chance to land the job. Under this circumstance, the GRASP zealously reaches out youth and helps them to find their own proficiency in a particular line. In the past 25 years, GRASP had established a social enterprise named “GRASP Enterprise”. The first thing they did is using the donation collected from the society to buy embroidery machines hence the enterprise has the ability to create a solid business. Once the silkscreen and embroidery shop start running, GRASP can provide real world skills and trainings for young people. The primary goal of GRASP Enterprise is to hire 35 young people a year, and for the next step, GRASP can be expanded to serve more young people with additional investments and donations.

This helping program is effective on young people who are struggling from gangs, however it still has weaknesses. Firstly, organization doesn’t have a clear enough understanding of young people’s mentality. Although gangs are extremely perilous, they are very attractive to the young people. According to the organization VPI, there are four main reasons that draw the youth into the gang: identity, protection, fellowship and intimidation. “Gang members cannot achieve an identity in their environment, so they gain it in the gang culture. They often visualize themselves as warriors against the outside world, protecting their neighborhood,” VPI says, “Children also may join a gang as a means of gaining protection from rival gangs. Children may view their neighborhood gang as a solution to the torment and threats from other gangs.” The GRASP enterprise may be able to help with young people who are threatened or forced to join the gang, but they cannot prevent those who were willing to join. Secondly, the intensity of the organization’s promotion isn’t enough, so that many troubled young people may miss it.

Since the GRASP can only influence a fringe of the gang population, some improvement should be made. The first one is to make knowledge of the possible consequence of being a gang member. It is feasible to make some speech and put information for young people. Only if the children realize the negative effects that gang brings to them, they will consider about quitting it and find a job to support themselves.

Solution 2

The BUILD Scholarship Program is generously supported by the Abbey Scholarship Program and the Heilman Scholarship Fund to help BUILD participants to reach their full academic potential. The Abbey Family envisioned a fund to support the young students throughout the duration of post-secondary education, as well as to make BUILD participants’ “mainstream dream” of college and career within the reach. The Abbey Scholarship Program provides the capable students the access to broader education and career prospects that have been impossible before to the highly at-risk youngsters from BUILD’s target communities. The minimum scholarship granted will be $2,500 and the maximum annual scholarship will be &10,000. The BUILD Scholarship is for those high school seniors seeking for financial aid for tuition and expenses who are commencing their first year of an undergraduate degree, whether having been accepted by a college or university or not. Since it has limited capacity and lots of applicants, please make sure the applications be complete with all necessary attachments.

This Scholarship Program indeed can assist the students with financial problem, but it is not flawless. Firstly, being caught in gangs is not only because of the money problem. In the article written by Sherrie Campbell, she states that “u nder the ideal of family we spend years sacrificing our mental and emotional health in abusive relationships under the notion that we ‘have to’ because these people are our family.” The reason that teenagers join gangs is not as easy as we thought. Imaging that if these children’s parents all engage in gangs, the only way left for them is to do the same choice like their parents. Financial aid might work on youth whose family is suffering from poverty, but it cannot cut off the relationship between gang and young people who connect with gang through family. Secondly, the scholarship program also has another major problem. In its website there is no description about the standard of financial aid, which means the distribution of donations is not opened for public. The un-transparent status of financial aid will reduce the society’s donating enthusiasm because they cannot see where their money goes.

To be out of this dilemma, there are two improvements can be made by the BUILD.  The critical issue they should fix is the status of donation. Letting the public know where the donation goes is extremely important. Doing some interview with young people who received the aid and illustrating the list of paupers are good steps to take. Once public see the effort that the organization makes, they will be more willing to give their money out for help. The second improvement they can do is to get involve with children who has family member engage in gangs. Young people always act like their parents even though it might be wrong. If BUILD can separate some money from donations to hold some classes in school, it might be helpful to stop young people from going astray in the first place.

Conclusion

Solving the gang problem admits of no delay. The murder rate in the Grand Crossing District, the Southside of Chicago is 62 per 100,000 people, a ccording to authorities’ data. Children will be traumatized by violence confliction every single day, if government does not prevent the conflict, the society will lose way more than imagine. The solution by GRASP is stable and already been running for years. Some improvements can make it more influential and expanded fleetly. BUILD’s scholarship Program can also help with this issue but it needs to be more specific and opened to public. I hope they can eventually help with children who have a problem with gangs.
