Susan Rosowski Flee Edna is a woman who has everything, a home, a prosperous husband, loving children, and protection; but who is not happy. This sadness goes against all conventions of society and makes her into the rebel who in the end kills herself for the personal pleasure of being set free from all responsibilities. Throughout the novel Edna never takes much interest in her children. She loves them, but they are a type of burden that restricts her from the carefree life, which she wishes to obtain. The children are not dependent on their mother for love and emotional support they just see her as the provider for material things. Edna states, she will give her life, but she will never give herself, thus never giving her full body and soul to her children, husband, or for anyone for that matter.
