Translation experience

本文是一篇关于作者自己翻译心得的演讲文稿。最后最重要的一点，作者写道：“我会马上把你交给他，当他把钱交给他，我立刻换了一个字“马上”，这样就变成这样，“我马上将你交给他”。一句“很快”就意味着有人会在短时间内做某事。然而，“立即”一词意味着有人会毫不犹豫地做某事。而根据主人公的特点和个性，我相信她会使用“立即”，而不是“尽快”。

Hello, everyone, this is my great opportunity to stand here and give you a speech. I have translated ..... From…….First of all, I would like to talk something about what I have translated and why I translated in this way. And I hope that you will enjoy my speech. Thank you.
     In the first sentence, I changed the word “could” into “was not able to”. Du Tench was not able to keep silent. The phrase “be able to” means that a person is capable of doing something or something is not beyond his or her power. I think that this phrase is much better than a single word. “Be able to” can be used in all kinds of tenses while “could” can not. Then, I wanted to talk about the word “some”. Instead of saying some little money, I translated that the madam asked him to spend a small sum of money. The word “sum” is usually used to describe money, hence, people will immediately know what is happening there when seeing this word. As can be seen, I changed “lousy” into “nasty”. The word “lousy” means that something is extremely dreadful or somebody is despicable and obscene. Personally speaking, I reckon that “nasty” is more suitable in terms of this sentence, because we know that the person that the madam was talking about was not good. The word “nasty” can be used to express that something is unattractive, undesirable, or in terrible taste, hence, this word can be used to describe the person in this text in a better way. Besides, the word “lousy” is not as simple as the word “nasty”, at least for those students whose mother language is not English, they may have difficulties in understanding this word. 
     After that, changed “this bum of yours” into “your bum”, I think this is a lot more precise and clear. This apple of mine means that this is my apple, and we do not really have to make it opaque. 
    From another perspective, the text wrote “if he is worth anything let...”, but I do not think that the word “worth” is appropriate in this place. Thus, I changed this sentence into “if he deserves something, please...”. “Worth” has been replaced by “deserves”, because “deserve” can be used to describe someone should definitely have it or receive it due to his or her behaviors or qualities. 
    Moreover, the author wrote “Li Jia had not a penny to his name, and had even pawned...”. The word “pawn” means that something is left as a guarantee in return for money. However, in text, the word “mortgage” will somehow be more proper, because this word means a conditional carriage of belongings as security for the repayment of a loan. Clearly, nobody is willing to go out without wearing any clothes, hence, he was likely to repay the bill and get his clothes back. 
    Besides, the author wrote “When has your old lady ever told a lie”. I changed the word “old” into “aged”. “Old” can also be used to describe something that is not new any more, thus, using “aged” to describe someone who is no longer young will be more appropriate, because we always say that we are aging or I am at the age of twenty and so on. 
Last but not least, the author wrote “I will hand you over to him as soon as he hands me the cash”, I changed the phrase “as soon as” into a single word “immediately”, so it becomes like this, “I will give you to him immediately”. The phrase “as soon as” means that someone will do something in or within a short time after getting or having something. However, the word “immediately” means that someone will do something without any hesitation, and the other person will be given something by this guy at right away. And according to the characteristics and personalities of the protagonist, “the madam” in the text, I believe that she would use “immediately” rather than “as soon as”.
