Nowadays, it is not a rare phenomenon that there are many people with body modification on the streets. In the past, many people were sacred of it, but with the passage of time, body modification has received increasing popularity, and even has become a mainstream in the current society. Statically, a survey conducted recently has showed that nearly 24% of the American people between 18 and 50, which means currently there is one people with body modification among every four Americans.
Body modification consists of several types, including tattoos, piercing, body painting, and plastic surgery. With the passage of time, it has gradually become a symbol for fashion among many people, while it was considered to represent bad guys generations ago. And in the following paragraphs, we will mainly focus on tattoos to further discuss this topic.
Many of my friends in America around me are with some tattoos in their bodies. At first, I cannot understand the meaning of tattoos. However, after knowing more about American culture, I found that the meanings of tattoos are interesting and diverse. For example, some people like tattoos simply because they believe it as the direct way to show what kind of people you are. From the tattoos, other people can understand you even without talking with you. In addition, it is also popularity that many people get tattoos as a permanent commemoration for something, like marriage anniversary. Moreover, there are some people who use tattoos to help them build up their confidence, especially among modern women.
I think the meaning of tattoos can be extended to a macroscopic degree in US society. In the past, tattoos, as well as other body modifications, were easily misunderstood. Nevertheless, they can be generally accepted by modern people. With no doubt, they are a symbol for the social development, and at the same time, the advancement of people’s notions.
