A Rose for Emily William Faulkner a man from the south with very little education became one of the most famous southern writers of his time. He wrote the story, “A Rose for Emily,” that contained one of the strangest characters I have ever encountered in a story. This character is Emily Grierson who lived in Mississippi, which was where Faulkner was from. Emily Grierson is viewed an anomaly for her gender and time period. An anomaly is one that is peculiar, irregular, abnormal, or difficult to classify. The social life, and social status of Emily Grierson is one way that she is so different from any woman. Emily is looked at as a very powerful woman due to the prestige of her father who was a war veteran. She lives in a very nice house that had at one point been on a very select street. She is looked at very highly from other people’s views, and she knows that she has power. The woman refuses to pay taxes to the town of Jefferson. “Perhaps he considers himself the sheriff…I have no taxes in Jefferson.” (Page 31) She believes that she emily, homer, woman, people, man, town, time, life, father, very, been, one, jefferson, house, years, taxes, south, grierson, even, didn’t, arsenic, anomaly, social, pay, northerner, next, never, killing, go, doesn’t, came, body, black, because, barron
