The ideal lender relationship consists of three aspects. Not overly optimistic expectations; good communications; and giving the lender a fair amount of fees.
Setting the proper expectations is the first step. The company should initiate meeting when try to set up the relationship. When first subject the company to the lender, try not to be too optimistic about the company's future. However, trouble is that if the company gives overly optimistic expectation to the lender, they will expect the company to deliver the results. Therefore, it is important to be prudent in setting the expectation.
The second aspect is constant communication. For example, if the company plans to send a quarterly report to the lender, it helps to send follow up and clear any confusion; and answer some questions. Hence, Use conservative words and phrasing to present how the company will perform.
The third aspect is to always think about lender relationship in the long term. Do not push the problem into the future, and reveal big crisis to the lender in the end, lenders will not be happy and it creates difficulty to solve the crisis. Even the crisis can be managed successfully, the lender will no longer willing to work with the company anymore. It is essential to make the relationship more valuable to the lender, and it is not professional to play bankers with each other to get a lower lending rate, otherwise no banker would want to work with such a company. The best thing to do is to give the banks the fare fee in order to work with the lender in the long term.
