Media literacy-“an ability which is used to understand, analyze, evaluate and create media knowledge when people are facing thousands of media information like television, videos, electronic games, films and various print media forms. It is often related to media education and aims to educate citizens with critical thinking about media information, to help citizens question the information behind the media, such as the purpose and the ownership, the audience of the media forms, the genres and the strategies it uses to attract audiences. There are more and more countries include the media literacy to media education and more classes are aiming to include more literate people in media fields.”
Culture-“a very wide conception and it is very hard to give an exact definition. In general, it is a social phenomenon, including lots of materials but beyond materials, can also linked to history, geography, tradition, lifestyle, literature and many other subjects. It originate and develop with human society. Media culture develops with
popular of TV, press, radio and cinema. It develops methods and analyses of contemporary films, television, music and other aircrafts to make people understand the nature and effect of the media. It is considered as a dominant culture to keep people informed and socialized and have great impact on public opinions.”
Communication-“also called media channel, a carrier or tool of information. It includes two meanings, one is regarded as the ways to pass information, such as telephone, computer and internet, press, broadcast, television and all the related techniques with information propagation. The other meaning is relevant to the organizations which collect, select, process and spread the information like newspaper offices, radio station or television station. One the one hand, the development of the information channels decide the speed, range and efficient of the information spreading, it also decides the content or the preference of the information.”
Mass communication-“a communication form which are spread by mass media toward a large of information receivers or audiences under the management of the nations. It is usually related to newspapers magazines, published books or radios which have great impact on the way individual thinking and their value, it even lead the tendency people’s lifestyle, society development by its large scale information spreading.”
Convergence-“a trend which unite traditional media forms like television, newspaper, Internet together and presents a multifunctional integration which includes five major elements, the technological, the industrial, the social, the textual and the political.
It also can be described as a phenomenon which integrates interconnection of information and communication technologies, computer networks and media content. “Three C’s “-computing, communication and content are brought together. The consequence of the integration will give birth to a new media form, like electronic magazines, blog news.”
Audience fragmentation-“a kind of classification which divide numbers of audience groups into different categories according to their preference, traits and habits when deliver information to audience. It can be divided from different aspects, like newspapers readers, the broadcast audience and television audience according to the media form they touch, stable and unstable audience according to the frequency they learn information, general or special audiences when it comes to their demands, which demonstrates the multiply demands of audience and. The division of audience will make the spread of information more efficient because of the similarity of the group.”
Aliteracy-“a phenomenon which stresses a person who is educated and can read but he or she is not interested in reading. It is regarded as a new kind of illiteracy but is different from traditional illiterate people who cannot read because the lack of education. It is a group who feel reading is not interesting or frustrated about reading, they refuse to accept new knowledge by reading and it usually occurred in developed countries. It urges people to have a sense of crisis and work more hard.”
Yellow journalism-“a type of journalism which presents exaggerated news about sex, violence and crime events, a preference of press or media editors, is usually little or no legitimate well researched or over-pressed news, and with eye-catching headlines for the aim of selling more newspapers and drawing more attentions.”
Cultural imperialism-“an imperialism which occupies the world market to make the cultural of a region to become worldwide and be accepted by people all around the world. In media aspects, the theory was put up with in 1960s. It internalizes the mass communication with the development of multimedia and the establishment of global information network and a worldwide message network is coming into being. The build of international information network of mass media will have greater impact on people’s lifestyle and even the whole nation”
