WRIT 102
10/02/2014
Thesis:
There are many arguments in this book, one of them brings up a question that draws my eye. What was a doctor’s role in the late 60s in England? I would ask when I see the author argue about how Sassalll should act in the local community. Meanwhile, I want to get the central idea of the book which reflects the background of the society in the late 60s.
Section #1:
The protagonist of the book is a country doctor full of imagination which is taken as a joke by the middle class. He is often seen as an alternative in the group of doctors. But in the eyes of the habitants, he is a good doctor, even though they can’t fully understand what Sassalll has done for them or himself. How can the readers find the reasons? The author gives many examples to show how Sasssal works as a doctor in different ways. At the beginning of the book, it describe a misty autumn at which a woodman needs medical help urgently. He overcomes the severe weather and drives to the rescue site patiently. He doesn’t give up the hope for the wounded. In the following pages, the author gives some other examples to depict the protagonist vividly. From the examples, I get to know why Sasssal is a good doctor. He has passion for his work. He is patient with the medical emergency. He not only pays attention to the pathogenesis from the illness and the sates of the ill, but also cares about the psychological changes and environment where the ill lives. He throws himself into the work to help more people out of pain caused by illness. From the dialogues between the ill and him, we can see Sassall’s behavior is different from the ordinary ones. He regards his career as his happiness in daily life and behaves as a life-saver strictly. When facing such an alternative, the patients may think a lot of his diagnostic and clinical skills at first. But slowly, the patients give more trust to Sassall due to his patience and concentration. On top of that, they see him as a good listener who can be shared sorrow and happiness with each other. So Sassall is seen as a good doctor in the light his skills and good attitude towards the patients.
Section #2:
Working as a doctor, Sassall is a good doctor. While when he lives as a civilian, how does he behave himself? He leads almost no social life of his own except in the village with the villagers. He is often passively involved in technical discussion with the men of the village. He treats all the men of the village as equals regardless of knowledge of others. What’s more, he is the objectives witness of the people’s lives. Sassall is accepted by the villagers and foresters as a man who, in the full sense of the term, lives with them. He is seen as the clerk of the healthy people’s records. Though he is privileged obviously because of his thought and talk, the villages do not consider him privileged due to his impressive thought. Because Sassall doesn’t rely on common sense and believes his innermost feelings and intuitions. At the same time, the villages are proud of him and are protective about him.
Section #3:
As I know, the British society had some kinds of hierarchy which is those scholars like to look down on those uneducated people. Besides, during the 60s in England, the society was in the revolution. The youth refused the social institution and developed what suited their styles. They became more open and advocated sexual freedom. From the description of the protagonist of the book, we find that he is a man whose passion for knowledge is a passion for constructive experience with which to so fill his time that subjectively it becomes comparable with the ‘time’ of those in anguish. He is nevertheless a man doing what he wants. Or, to be more accurate, a man pursuing what he wishes to pursue. Sometimes the pursuit involves strain and disappointment, but it is his unique source of satisfaction. Like an artist or like anybody else who believes that his work justifies his life. His character and behavior reflect the background of society. In the book, the author mentions the middle-class life which is ignored by Sassall. I think Sassall not only takes some prejudice for the middle-class, but also dislikes the life full of common sense. He wants to break up the common thoughts and starts from his innermost feelings and intuitions. And he devotes his life to the practice, even though the results are not always satisfactory. He gets more from the practice apart from the technical skills. Maybe we can get these conclusions from the social standards nowadays. If we were thrown into that times, as the villages, we might think more of Sassall’s technical skills in helping patients out of pain rather than pay little attention to his life as an ordinary person. Even, we might like the people stepping into the middle class laugh at Sassall’s behavior. With the change of times, the standards is changing as well. We can’t appraise a person without taking the times background into consideration.
Section #4:
The book reflects the social values of people’s lives and the social background by describing a unique countryside doctor. We can see the title of the books clearly which is ‘A fortunate man’. How to understand the word ‘fortunate’? If the readers don’t read it through, they can’t understand why the protagonist of the book is fortunate. The protagonist is a popular hero. Because he holds the abstract idealism and is certain about the value of the actual lives of the patients. The author says Sassall is fortunate, which I think is referred to that his spirit is ample and he is fortunate to hold his nature and break up the social prejudice to throw himself into his work without depending on the common sense. What’s more, we find it fortunate for the villages to be proud of Sassall and protective about such a hero. Though they are unprivileged, they can give some relatively equal comments on Sassall. The older social institution is not suitable for the development of the times. Sassall is the symbol of the new social institution and the power of the revolution. The changes in the attitude towards Sassall imply the society changes and show more people begin to advocate the social values of people’s lives and pay more attention to practice rather than common sense.
I pay my attention to the book. On one hand, I want to find what a doctor’s role was in the late 60s in England. On the other hand, I want to get the central idea of the book which reflects the background of the society in the late 60s. The protagonist of the book is the symbol of the new social institution and the power of the revolution. He refuses the timeworn institution and cares about the values of people’s lives. He is a hero as a doctor, and is also a hero as a reformer. As a doctor, he may be an alternative in the light of tradition. He may lose many companions and gets isolated, but he never changes his abstract idealism and keeps moving forward. The society is changing with the efforts from more people like Sassall. The villages is the source of the power, the educated is as well. After reading the book, I think in old times, people believed common sense more rather practice. But now more people have the passion and courage to break the common sense and innovate. In old times, people did not care about the revolution of the country or the society. But now, more people actively take part in the social activities and pay more attention to the social standards and the public values. We encourage more people to innovate in all the aspects of the society and concentrate on people’s development with the social development. In old times, the society had deep sense of hierarchy. But now, we advocate equality among people. We carry the concept of people foremost into practice gradually. Every individual gets respects from others.
