1．Gender and nation
In the first example, the speaker is a young man living in a foreign country who is eager for pure and true love. However, he is indecisive, shy and sensitive so he is not bold enough to directly seek love. In contrast, females in the nation he stays are generally open and vibrant. This sharp contrast implies the prosperity and mightiness of the nation the speaker stays and the comparative weakness of his motherland. In the second example, Mary is judged to be someone who mainly focuses on enjoyment, vain glories and personal freedom. Unlike the speaker, she is not the kind of person who puts patriotism before personal life. Therefore, the speaker, who believes that they have parted ways and attitudes toward their nation, needs to say goodbye to her.
2. Individual and revolution
The speaker hesitates to answer the question directly because firstly he never gave a deep thought about it before. Secondly, he wants to answer the question in the way that makes Hsiang Lin’s wife feel good but he is not sure what she was expecting. From the speaker’s thoughts, the author expresses his view on the necessity and urgency to launch a revolution. In the second example, “animalistic suffering” refers to people’s ignorance of their social and historical situations. It applies to everyone including the rich and the poor. The author implies that animality and revolution are incompatible. The latter is supposed to remove all the animality of individuals and lead them toward a new life. The authors’ views of revolutions are complicated. On the one hand, they believe in the significance of revolutions. On the other hand, they are concerned about the fates of individuals during revolutions.
