Analysis of the poem Repetition

这篇essay写的是《Repetition》这首诗的作者Phil Kaye，repetition是一首叙事诗有69节，作者通过这首诗 反映一个家庭问题：离婚及其对孩子的影响。

  Phil Kaye, the author of the poem “repetition”,create this poem to suggest a specific family problem:divorce and it’s damage to the children.It was written in 2013 and therefore,it is a particular example of the modern poetry.Besides, it is a narrative poem and there are 69 stanzas in this poem.After examining the whole poem,we can catch the drift of the main theme.As the title of the poem states,repetition is a so-called “trick” that author’s mother taught him while the parents in this poem was going through a dramatic divorce.It is said that if you repeat something over and over again it loses its meaning and therefore it can numb the pain.
  The poem is written in the first person and the gender of author is unknown.From a child’s perspective,it would be a lot more easier to narrate the whole divorce and the following both physical and mental damage.In order to make readers understand the characters in this poem,the poet emphasize words and phases like “mother” ,“family” and “Mom, Dad”throughout this poem.
  In the beginning of this poem,a child was told by his/her mother that if you repeat something over and over again it loses its meaning.Unlike the poem “The Raven”,this poem has no rhyme scheme or internal rhymes.As J.R.R. Tolkien observed, alliteration “depends not on letters but on sounds”.Thus,the word “separation”, “dominating” or “language” are alliterative.Apart from the content,certain writing techniques shin through the whole poem.First of all,metaphors like “the bed” is used to describe an unstable mind of the poet.Second, anaphora is also very evident in this poem,taking the example of “the bed” and the repeating word “apart”, “wake up”.From my point of view, each metaphor represent a different mental state of the poet.To be more specific, the metaphor “bed” create a relaxing,relieved felling in most conditions but in this specific poem, the “bed” is “just floating”,creating a opposite felling of unease and anxiety.By applying all those writing techniques,the poet dashed off a picture of a lonely,desperate and abandoned child, which is a vulnerable victim of the divorce,with a few strokes.
  In the middle of this poem,as time passed by,repetition became the poet’s “favorite game”. The main character in this poem became an adult and After this cruel  parental divorce, the poet developed a stutter and still cannot come out of the shadow of parents’ divorce.He claimed that he was “injured” .This part has no rhyme scheme or internal rhymes either.Besides,there is no words that make a sound that imitates their meaning.But,I have to point out that there is a well-used simile in this part of the poem:”Before their last argument they sent me off to the neighbor’s house,like some astronaut jettisoned from the shuttle”, which vividly expresses that the poet was devastated and helpless.
  In the end of this poem,what the poet want to say is that even though this divorce hurt he/she, he/she still love his/her parents.It remind us that you cannot escape from things that have already happened by repeatedly saying the meaningless words.In this part,first of all,in spite of the fact that rhyme scheme or internal rhymes are nowhere to be found,the the metaphor “ floating bed” is found again.Secondly,repetition like “ I love you” and “separation” are used again.Thirdly, personification is used in this part,take the example of this two sentences: “Every terrible moment skips upon its own announcement”,“I still feel the claw of meaning in the bottom of my throat”.
