Bonus
Highly developed is literature in modern times and the artists’ personal innate talent in works of art and continuous efforts after their birth due to the constant observation, comprehension, learning, and practice from the outside world and their being good at observing and thinking at the first place, nowadays the phenomenon of appreciating the artistic works of several well-known artists at home and abroad is surprisingly common here and there. As is known to us, it is turning more and more ubiquitous for museums to post online exhibitions and virtual tours to attract traffic to the institution’s website, some of which exist only in the virtual while others are based on popular exhibitions that are actually on view at the museum. The following will be a guided review for the online exhibition from my own perspective, Van Gogh’s Masterpieces from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, as is currently available via a virtual tour on the National Gallery’s website.
Speaking of what the point of the exhibition is and what the curator is trying to convey through the exhibition, it must refer to the primary aim of drowning all the people that have “walked through” the exhibition in an atmosphere of arts to appreciate the beauty of it and in the meanwhile to understand the culture hidden in those artworks, capturing the clearly defined concepts and viewpoints within. After looking through all the masterpieces from the exhibition, I form myself a feeling that the theme of the whole exhibition is that the mood, personality and attitude of a certain artist in a particular stage of one’s life can to a large degree determine the style and the emotional coloring of the paintings in that period.
With the purpose and the theme of the exhibition being mentioned in the above, what comes next at the list is the displaying way of the paintings in the exhibition. As far as I'm concerned, the arrangement of those paintings within this museum is a combination of thematic, based on similar styles and chronological in a way or another. Detailed speaking, the arrangement being thematic can be seen from that all paintings in a certain room are all somewhat related to a certain theme in themselves, such as Head of a Woman, Head of a Man, and Head of an Old Man are in the room of “the potato eaters” while Self-Portrait with Straw Hat, Self-Portrait with Felt Hat, Self-Portrait and Self-Portrait as an Artist are in the room of Self-Portraits, all other paintings belonging to a certain room as well show this feature. The aforementioned list of the paintings is just what makes the displaying way becomes apparent to me while I am “walking” through the exhibition. That the displaying way is based on similar styles can be naturally concluded in that all paintings in a certain room are all of the same style, being oil on canvas or oil on pasteboard in this case. As for its being chronological, it can only be got after you have gone through all paintings in all rooms as only in that way can you find that all paintings are a series of paintings that were created by Van Gogh at a particular stage in his life, each and every stage being distinct from the others as the mood, personality and attitude of this certain artist has changed more or less with the change of the surroundings sooner or later. The combination of all the three manners can undoubtedly add to the exhibition theme in that the continuous emphasizing on a certain aspect can be enforced by the subsequent paintings of the same room.
Talking about the specific painting named “Self Portrait as an Artist”, it must be stated is that the artist holds that “it can offer an image of the shifting artistic personality he wanted to project” [1], relating to the theme closely. It will absolutely relate to the room it is displayed in is because that it is a painting detail of self portrait, this one being the self portrait as an artist. Another painting I would like to introduce is Wheatfield with Crows, the last painting in the exhibition in that it is the last life period of Van Gogh who took suicidal in the end. Its subject matter is “vast fields of wheat under troubled skies” [1], the didactic panel information delivering to us endless sadness and extreme loneliness due to the death of this great master.
At the very last of it, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and sincere hope that everyone can treat arts with enthusiasm and further promote the development of arts in the end.
