“Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. ”is a saying of Confucius’s. But why is it two graves? In fact, if we look into the sentence, we will find its inner meaning. When you are thinking about doing harm to others, you are actually harming yourself at the same time. The metaphoric meaning here means that a desire or behavior for revenge may hurt the seeker as much as the victim in the end. In other words, it implies that you should make a preparation of your death in the process of your seeking revenge. In revenge, you are not only going to hurt your target, but you will hurt yourself as well. To sum up, there will be no good coming out of seeking revenge. In addition, seeking revenge may be a process of one’s going to the dogs or depravity. People are not born to be evil, but they turn to be wicked in the journey of life in which we meet a plenty of something bad. Revenge is among them. It is a process of change, of turning into someone who is your second self, the one that is complicated and with more desire. Every process of life is a short journey that combines a whole life, so is revenge. It may not be a beautiful one, but still part of life and you have to be responsible for it. Something just happens with a certain result, so do revenge. People would pay for what they do sooner or later. So, once you start the journey, no matter what your purpose is, you are involved and you have to undertake the responsibility. Furthermore, the desire and evil thinking of your revenge is the source that leads you to the journey as well as the grave that you dig before the journey. Because the change of your mind, the generation of the evil thoughts suggest the future of your life---you dig a grave for someone else and you dig one for you, too.
