Journal 2  Can You be Fat and Feminine?

A content analysis was conducted on the people’s language used in the “fat” in its culture. The analysis was based on the questionnaire about how the respondents saw the relationship between feminine and weight. The question had different levels of intensity, which largely decided how people responded. When asked whether people’s weight would influence their engagement with others, either female or male, the majority chose NO. However, when questioned about the link between small and feminine, all the male respondents said YES, while almost all the female answered NO. Obviously, male attached great weight to the link between the size and feminine, revealing that they were actually more inclined to make engagement with those small women, while it was contradictory that they thought of no apparent relationship during their engagement in their social life. Additionally, women would rather see size as a stupid signal as feminine, totally different from the perception of men. It offered a great reason to dig into what caused the differences, while male or female seemed to talk about ” fat” negatively, related to unhealthy, lazy and other stigmatizing language. The language bears the connotation. Obviously, fat could cause a bad impression. But interestingly, majority of the respondents viewed it plausible to be fat and healthy simultaneously, even though the word unhealthy was their first impression of “fat”. In light of the content analysis, fat women enjoyed a poor popularity among their social life, mainly because they violated what the men saw as normal or feminine. But the valuable analysis was how language could serve as to construction. Specifically, a choice of words is a choice of world. Language itself needs context. In different contexts, words can maintain different meanings, to serve human moral purpose, satisfy their inner demand or express their true feelings.
