A Decision for Family Affection
A Brief Introduction of CharactersANNE: A 17-year-old orphan girl, adopted by Maria’s family.
SUSAN: ANNE’s neighbor and best friend, the same age with ANNE.
MARIA: ANNE’s adopted mother.
(Lights up on the interior of a living room.)
ANNE
(On Cell) What? I am admitted to enter Royal Music College? You and I? We both?! Oh my God…You are not treating me, are you? Oh… (Begins to weep) No, no, Susan, dear, I am perfectly fine…I am…just happy, terribly happy! You know how I am eager to go there really. What? You’ve already got the offer? Just now? Oh yes of course! Do come to me now…I just can’t waiting!
SUSAN
(Knocks the door) Anne! Anne! It’s me! Susan!
ANNE
(Opens the door) Susan! I’m waiting for you! (kisses Susan) Come in quickly!
SUSAN
See Anne, (Shaking the offer) they published the admission information on the newspaper, too. I have already read it. The total number of their admission is only half! Half Anne! How lucky we are!
ANNE
I just feel that I am in heaven now! Read it Susan, read the offer!
SUSAN
Dear Ms. Susan, I am delighted to inform that you have been admitted by Class of 2015 of Royal Music College. Please accept my personal congratulations for your outstanding achievements! We are very much hope that you will decide to enter Royal Music College and join us. Looking forward to seeing you in September.
ANNE
Oh…Marvelous words Susan!
SUSAN
How exciting moment, Anne! I am sure you will soon get your offer. We are in the same city, and they must have sent them at the same time, so it won’t be long.
ANNE
(Nods) I do hope so, my darling Susan. Since I come here five years ago, you have always been my closest friend. I can say that you gave me my first true friendship, Susan, I can’t imagine what my life would be like without the care and accompany you gave me when I first arrived here.
SUSAN
Oh don’t say like that Anne, you don’t know how glad I was to have such a lovely new friend like you at that time. I can’t even pass the exam of Royal Music College without your help and encouragement!
ANNE
Anyway, we can live and study together again for several years! I am so exciting for that!
SUSAN
Yes, me too! (Hugs Anne)
(Pause)
I am going back home, Anne, my mother is waiting for me for dinner. What about going out tomorrow?
ANNE
That can’t be better! See you, Susan!
SUSAN
See you, darling! (Leaves the house)
(After a few moments, Maria, Anne’s adoptive mother, enters into the room with a newspaper in her hand.)
MARIA
Anne! Have you read the newspaper?
ANNE
Yes, I have, Maria! I am admitted by Royal Music College!
MARIA
You are excellent, my dear! I read it on the newspaper. There is the admission list! (Shows the newspaper to Anne) Your name is here, you see?
ANNE
(Takes the newspaper with trembling hands) Yes, it’s true…it’s true! I heard about it from Susan earlier today, and she is admitted too! (Reads the list carefully) Oh, there is her name!
MARIA
(Smiles to Anne silently)
ANNE
We can be together again! You are happy for me, aren’t you Maria? My dream finally is realized after these years! (Weeps for joy) Oh…I…I am sorry Maria…but I am too excited… (Wipes away tears)
MARIA
(Takes out a handkerchief and wipes away tears for Anne) Of course, Anne, I am extremely happy for you… I am proud of you!
(Then, Maria walks to the chair beside and sits down. Anne is still reading the newspaper and immersed in happiness. Maria puts on her presbyopic glasses and begins to mend some clothes, but it seems to be difficult. She tries to thread a needle for several times, but just cannot succeed.)
MARIA
(Heaves a sigh.)
ANNE
Maria? (Turns her head towards Maria) What’s wrong?
MARIA
Don’t worry about me, Anne, I just have some difficulty threading a needle. (Pause) I am getting older and older these years, and my vision is also fading…
ANNE
Maria… (comes to Maria and snuggles up on her.)
MARIA
Anne, promise me? When you go to college, work hard and never stop pursuing for your dream! But… when you are free or in holiday, come back home to keep me company… I do need you, and…I will miss you.
ANNE
Hum… (Nods her head silently, sinking into deep thought.)
MARIA
The health condition of your adoptive father has been falling and falling during these years. He always works outside for the whole day and comes back home late in the night. Recently he always complains about his old pain in his waist. I am so worry about him… What shall we do when we are both old? I am afraid we can’t maintain our present life for long. Now you are leaving for college, we must find a way… we have to find a way…but what can we do? (heaves a sigh again.)
ANNE
(Listens carefully beside and keeps silent, frowning.)
MARIA
Why you look so unhappy? Cheer up Anne, don’t worry about us. Now you have grown up, and it’s time for you to choose your own way of life. Now you have been admitted by such a famous music school. Your adoptive father and I just can’t say enough to express how proud and happy we are! Oh… don’t worry about our life, there is always a way to solve all the problems, isn’t there? Things are not so bad as you think, Anne.
ANNE
Maria…I’ve made up my mind.
MARIA
What is it, Anne?
ANNE
I won’t go to Royal Music School. (looking straight into Maria’s eyes.)
MARIA
What?! (turns her head to Anne surprisingly.)
ANNE
I said I will not go to Royal Music School. I will stay to keep you company!
MARIA
What? Nonsense, Anne! Do you know what you are saying, Anne?
ANNE
Yes, Maria, yes…I know perfectly what I am saying.
MARIA
I can’t understand, Anne, why?
ANNE
Maria, if it wasn’t you and my adoptive father that adopted me five years ago, how could I have a home? Probably I would never have a chance to feel what parents’ love is! If it wasn’t you, I could never imagine to go to school and receive education, and to start a new life here, to meet my best friend Susan! I might have already died!
MARIA
(Moved and shocked) Anne, we adopted you because we LOVE you, not for anything else. Your adoptive father and I don’t have our own children, but we longed to have a child to love. You see, people always need someone to love. Then you were chosen by the orphanage and appeared at the train station that day, and we took you home. You can’t imagine how excited we are to have you in our family! Thank God, it must be providence!
ANNE
I know, Maria, I know…and I can never express too much about my gratefulness to you. But actually, I was not the one you originally want…was I?
MARIA
(Stands up from the chair and becomes angry.) What? How did you know that? Who told you?
ANNE
No one told me, Maria, don’t be angry, and do sit down. (Pulls at Maria’s arm and lets her sit down again.) Several years ago when I just arrived at this house, I used to hear you and my adoptive father talking one day…I am sorry but I didn’t mean it, I just heard it by accident…I heard you were saying that you wanted a boy, not a girl…and there must have been something wrong from the orphanage. And…err…you wanted to send me back to the orphanage. (begins to cry.)
MARIA
Oh…you have known that…but we didn’t do that at last, because we were so fond of you…you know that.
ANNE
Of course you were. I knew that. My adoptive father has been in poor health condition for years, and you wanted a boy to share his work when he gets old. When I heard you talking that day, I was so scared; I would like to do anything except going back to orphanage! How I hoped to have a home!
MARIA
(begins to have tears in the eyes.) And life has proved that we did the right thing. You are so excellent, my dear. We are grateful not to have brought you back to the orphanage.
ANNE
I am not a boy, and I am sorry for not being able to share my adoptive father’s heavy work load outside. But there is something I can do, Maria. Let me keep you company for the rest of your life! Let me help you mend the clothes!
MARIA
Anne! I can’t agree! I can’t let you do that! What about your college study? What about your favorite music career?
ANNE
I decide to be a music teacher in a school here! Isn’t it a wonderful way to start my music career? College is not the only way for me! Yes I do love music, but I can also go on my study here! I can teach more children who love music, more children like me! It is my value, my best way to repay you and many more people in this lovely place. Isn’t it marvelous, Maria?
MARIA
Anne… (Gradually cries aloud.)
ANNE
Oh, my dearest Maria… (wipes away tears for Maria.) Don’t cry please…Susan will come back in holidays, she can bring a lot of books and wonderful news in the school! We can still study together, she can teach me! It’s settled then! Maria, there is something much more important than that. Family affection is the most important thing in my heart!
(Anne takes the clothes from Maria’s hands and begins to thread the needle for her. They both laughed. Blackout.)
