Times or Thames
In our daily life, there are always some mysterious usages of language that lead to my curiosity. As for me, one instance is that why Times is translated as tai wu shi shi bao, which means Thames Times. Though the newspaper obviously have no relationship with that river beside London, in China, for those readers only recognize Chinese, the paper is just named after the river. When I was a child, I also used to think this is a newspaper of Thames river, and I could not even related it to its original English name Times. Why this language myth occurs? I probed into this question, but found few research about this language myth. A language blog run by Chinese (http://dipan.kekenet.com/blog-1351908-104286), offers one explanation about it. It explains that it could be that because Times has similar pronounciation as Thames, therefore the first Chinese translator made the mistake. After his /her translation, people found it wrong, but keep using it. On the Chinese version Quora, Zhihu, one explains that since there are many newspaper named Times in the world, to keep the translation in this way also helps differentiate one newspaper from the others.
