The Yellow Wallpaper The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story written in 1892 by a woman named Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who suffered from severe depression after giving birth to her daughter. Ironically, the story is narrated by the main character, which happens to be a woman suffering from temporary nervous depression, also she has given birth a short time ago. The narrator’s husband, a physician of high standing, has diagnosed her and prescribed bed rest. The couple rented a mansion for the summer to insure that the narrator would get the proper rest. The narrator and her husband, John, stayed in the upstairs bedroom that had many barred windows, and great immovable bed, and hideous yellow wallpaper. The narrator spends most of her time focusing on the patterns of the wallpaper. The yellow wallpaper in the bedroom is important to the story because it represents a form of imprisonment, which is symbolic of the conditions to which the narrator has been subjected. The narrator is primarily confined to the bedroom while her husband works most of the day. The narrator is a writer and her husband has forbidden her to write.
