The Whaler The story probably takes place in Ireland in the 1800s were whaling had great importance giving blubber for soap an more important, fuel which was used for streetlights as well as light in the homes. It must be some small town, by the fact that everybody knows each other. Giving it’s a story about whaling it probably takes place by the sea. The narrator is probably quite clever, has read a lot of books about whaling and is interested in geography. He has a great imagination, e.g. about how big a whale is, and probably his idea about the fight man versus beast. He maybe is a little naive, he doesn't try to see things in another perspective, and he keeps his maybe a little romantic idea about how things are. The narrator is probably not very old, if he had been older he would probably have found out that all things are not as lovely as they seem. He gets really surprised once again when the whaler tells him about his affair with Mrs Early: “A thunderclap of silence stopped the morning in tits tracks. His whales past was nothing compared to this”.
