The Great Gatsby
In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, materialism corrupted many characters. Daisy blew off a life of happiness because she believed that material possessions were more important. Gatsby had low self-esteem because he could never have the belongings that would satisfy his loves wants. Myrtle was given all the love in the world by her husband William, but she wanted what he couldnt give her: money.
Daisy Buchanan was offered a life of satisfaction and love by Gatsbys standard. She came from a wealthy family and had enjoyed a very comfortable life. When she met the young military playboy, life was a big box of fun and they fell madly in love. After her beau left for the army, she married a rich man from Chicago, Tom Buchanan. For Daisy was young and her artificial world was redolent of orchids and pleasant, cheerful snobbery and orchestras which set the rhythm of the year, summing up the sadness and suggestiveness of life in new tunes.
