Green Symbolism Of The Great Gatsby
Her scarlet lips, a fiery debate, a luscious red rose and the perfect murder. Just as the color red is associated with passion, countless other hues can trigger strong human emotion or arousal. Thus, color has come, in many circumstances, to represent certain sentiments or emotions. Some of these sentiments may be more traditional, others perhaps used to express some deeper meaning. Green, as the most prominent color employed by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel The Great Gatsby, is representative of envy, money, and most largely, hope.
One possible meaning of the color green is envy. Gatsby, in some instances, can be seen as a covetous character, sometimes green with envy. To begin with, Gatsby harbored some envy of the established rich class. Gatsby threw extravagant parties and bought expensive things, such as the hot, green leather of the seat (Fitzgerald 121) of his Roles Royce to try and merge into the old money class he was so fond of.
