Environmental Scan Mel Villegas MGT/498 October11, 2011 Mark Tocco Environmental Scan The survival of any organization is produced and habituated by the environment because of perceptions, resources, issues, and chances. Because of this, it is essential for any business to observe the applicable changes that occur in the environment and devise policies to adjust to variations. Simply stated, for a company to endure and succeed, the company needs to conquer the trials of the constant shifting environment. Conducting an environmental scan for the two following companies will offer a background to increase chances and distribute the resources in expectation of the changes in the environment. Research and Description of Companies Starbucks Starbucks originated in 1971, consisting of one store that specialized in whole bean and ground coffee, and tea, in “Seattle’s Pike Place Market” . Now Starbucks interacts with millions of customers in over 17, 00 stores in “Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, El Salvador, England, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong/Macau, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United States and Wales” . Starbucks offers more than just regular coffee. They specialize in more than 30 different blends of coffee, hot and iced beverages, smoothies, and teas. Starbucks also offers brewing machines for coffee and tea, mugs, music, and books. With the beverages, “pastries, sandwiches, salads, oatmeal, fruit cups and yogurt parfaits” are also offered to customers. Starbucks has also expanded to offering consumer products such as Frappuccino’s and ice cream . The internal environment of Starbucks represents general conditions within the company that affect its aptitude to execute a successful strategy. Internal elements of concern are human resources, growth strategy such as a diversification portfolio, and brand management. External environments of Starbucks factors of focus: competition from other companies in the same industry, legal-political challenges and opportunities like environmental concerns, and demographic-social issues such as income. Coca-Cola Coca-Cola is the major producer, supplier, and vendor of ”nonalcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups” . Coca-Cola sells a variety of 3500 different products . Along with Coke, Coca-Cola sells “four of the world’s top five soft drink brands, including Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite,” diet and light soft drinks, waters, juices, “teas, coffees and sports drinks” . The internal environment for Coca Cola has key attributes that include competence in production method, through management skills, and successful communication. To monitor the internal environment, the company needs to perform an evaluation of the processes and take action on any factors that cause inadequacies on the phases of production. The internal risk factors include “obesity and other health concerns; scarcity and quality of water; changes in the nonalcoholic beverages business environment, including changes in consumer preferences based on health and nutrition considerations, shifting consumer tastes and needs, changes in laws and regulations relating to beverage containers and packaging, including container deposit, recycling, eco-tax and/or product stewardship laws or regulations; adoption of significant additional labeling or warning requirements, the ability to maintain brand image and corporate reputation as well as other product issues such as product recalls; our ability to achieve overall long-term goals; and our ability to protect our information systems” Coca Cola knows that the external environment may affect the business, and the economy. Increases and decreases in the economy, principles and attitudes from the consumers and the demographic patterns greatly control the revenue of Coca-Cola. Competitive Advantages and Current Strategies Starbucks The green movement is an important social influence forcing organizations to change. Individuals are becoming more concerned with preserving the environment and saving the planet. Starbucks has reacted to this concern by expecting that their suppliers meet their standards for sustainable development. Starbucks has a partnership with Green Teams to establish company-wide recycling, reducing waste, and conserving energy and water programs . Another trend that will affect Starbucks is a growing concern for healthy eating habits. Starbucks needs to guarantee that the products they serve are not labeled as unhealthy. By adding healthier options such as salads, substitutes are available for those individuals looking to remain healthy but still enjoy the atmosphere of Starbucks . Whenever large chain stores open in a town, some individuals believe that the locally owned stores will be out of business. Starbucks has a program in place to help the communities and curtail the label of “super chain.” For each hour an employee volunteers for a local charity, Starbucks will donate a comparative amount of money. Starbucks also sponsors local charities and community programs. Coca-Cola The strategy of Coca-Cola is to target distinct market groups divided by competitive intensity and socioeconomic levels; implement a well- planned product, packaging, and pricing strategies through channel distribution and to gain operational efficiency in the company. A few of the competitive advantages of Coca-Cola are market leadership, managerial expertise, joint ventures, flexible organizational structure, and inventive business solutions . Market leadership is existing as the world’s second largest bottler. Coca-Cola provides managerial expertise by training programs to improve abilities. Coca-Cola has joint ventures with companies in Mexico and Brazil to improve recognition in Latin America. Coca-Cola has a flexible organization structure consisted of diverse multi-functional group of executives from many countries. With inventive business solutions, the company looks to heighten engineering and supply capacity to boost operational effectiveness . In conclusion, both companies are well known globally and are environmentally aware. Both Starbucks and Coca-Cola have competitive advantages and different strategies to ensure sustainability in a changing environment. -Y
