classic style

According to Thomas and Turner, one of the obvious and important characteristics of classic style is that every word counts. To be specific, browsing is allowed in classic style, but skimming is not. Things may switch from paragraph to paragraph, but within one unit, there are many important nuances, which we must pay great attention to. And this is also a very essential different point from skimming, which does not contain such details. This characteristic is clearly presented in The Peloponnesian War, The Apology of Socrates, and Discourse on Method.
In The Peloponnesian War, there is only one paragraph telling of the story of Peloponnesians and their confederates invading Attica, but unfortunately encounter a great plague and mortality of men. Every word in this passage is focused on this matter in the Peloponnesian war and provides information that cannot be ignored. Even though this paragraph is not very long, yet every important detail has been presented. At the beginning of the passage, the background information of the event, namely the time, the place and the objects of description is offered. Then, the matter of the plague is presented. Some facts about the disaster are descripted here, for example, many methods have been tried but proved invalid and many people died of such plague. These facts are necessary to show how horrible and lethal this plague is. Leaving these facts out, readers might fail to feel and understand the terribleness of the infectious disease. Bearing this knowledge in mind, readers can better understand why they gave them all over at last. In the passage, the details of how the plague attacked people and how the ways that people tried turned out failed are provided. Without such closely-connected details, readers may get puzzled at the end of the matter, and the effect of the plague is not likely to achieve. The paragraph gives an overview of an event happened in the Peloponnesian war that is detailed and complete. Different from skimming in which details do not count, writing in classic style gives importance to every word and every nuance.
In Apology of Socrates, there are long paragraphs containing all kinds of nuances. The passage is presented with many details that make up the whole. At the beginning, the author stated, as a background, that there are many people who have already written about the apology of Socrates on his defense and on his end, but in fact they have not come to the correct conclusion of Socrates that he desires death more than life. These words make readers understand the definition and intention of this writing. In that way, it naturally comes to the necessity of writing this passage. Then, the author leads the readers to a serious of dialogues between Socrates and Hermogenes. In the dialogues, Hermogenes mainly asks questions and Socrates gives answers, through which we can know the reasons why Socrates prefers death to life. The dialogues, or questions and answers, are very important details that tell every slight thought and idea of Socrates. The whole process of the dialogue goes smoothly and deepens little by little, presenting a whole browse of the matter. Every single detail, or every word that Socrates says in this passage is essential for the overall understanding. If any of the details is missed, we may miss an important point and may get confused. The next paragraph switches to another part, which is mainly the statement of Socrates in front of the jury. As to the paragraphs that follow, they each talks about a new stage between Socrates and the jurors. Different paragraphs are focused on separate minor topics. Within each paragraph, there are adequate details supporting the main idea in all ways, and this is an obvious feather of classic style, which is quite different from skimming, since in skimming, details are more likely to be omitted.
In Discourse on Method, there is a clear switch between every two paragraphs. But within one paragraph, one point is tightly focused on and a variety of important details are closely attached to it. This passage mainly talks about science and methods. The first paragraph gives a brief introduction of the common view of sense held by people, which is in fact not true. Not good sense, but the power of forming good sense or reason is equally distributed in all human beings. And based on such background information, the author naturally pushes his point of view further and comes to the explanation part, after which a more important issue is presented, that is, to apply them well with proper methods. Reading this paragraph as a whole, we feel that every sentence, every detail is indispensible. There are no redundant words. Without any part of it, the matter stated will not be a coherent whole. In the following paragraphs, the author tells some things about himself, which are very essential details for they are used as examples for explanation. With the advance of writing, different units are presented gradually. The argumentation is proved step by step, like a general browsing of the integral thinking. Through the details which are persuasive and logical, readers can better follow the author’s trend of thinking.
Through the above analysis of the three passages, we can see that every word counts is indeed an important characteristic of classic style. In classic writings, every word has its place and role in the whole passage. There are a great number of details offering information of all respects to readers. When reading a classic writing, it is just like browsing the whole matter in the passage, since we can get every useful detail in a comprehensive and all-sided way. Therefore, when reading a passage in classic style, great attention must be paid to every word and every detail with caution, and only in this way can readers grasp the whole meaning of the passage and miss nothing. This is very different from skimming, in which only a brief general idea can be received, and the detailed information is missed.
