The Lost Beautifulness

I choose Hanneh Hayyeh from The Lost Beautifulness. Hanneh was a great mother who loved her son and had her own dream in her mind. As a woman, she did not give up her rights, on the contrary she tried her best to ask for her rights and was always on fire with the wonder of her son, quote from Aniza Yezierska’s original book. And this spirit, in my point of view, achieves Adams’s definition of the American Dream.

In 1931, American writer and historian James Truslow Adams created the word “American Dream” in his book The Epic of America. Adams was born in a poor family in 1878. In 1898 he got a Bachelor Degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and in 1900 he got a Master of Philosophy from Yale University. After that he followed his father and started working on Wall Street. There, he could earn enough money and chase his most favorite thing-writing. He won a little fame for his research on the history of Long Island and he was asked to collect data for the upcoming Paris Peace Conference by the advisor to the president colonel Edward M. House. After World War I, Adams created his New England Trilogy, and the first volume The Founding of New England let him win Pulitzer Prize in 1922. In 1927, he published Provincial Society and this book was added to famous History of American Life series, which brought him much fame. It was obvious that Adams had been a respectful scholar when he wrote The Epic of America several years later. In this book Adams indicated that the American dream was a national dream, in this country people lived better and had their own opportunities according to their abilities and achievements. The subject of American Dream is to make people of all classes live better, richer and happier.

Anize Yezierska (1885-1970) was born in Poland and went to the United States later. She grew up in a Jewish enclave in New York's Lower East Side. Columbia University’s Teacher’s College gave her a scholarship so she got education there. She used to be a maid, laundress and night school student and her story reflected these early experiences. This story The Lost Beautifulness, the leading character Hannah longed for entering the middle-class some day because this class owned dignity. She even got many coats of paint on the walls of her kitchen. When her landlord decided to raise the rent, she got angry but was admirable. She encountered continual barriers of American democratic pinnacle to still living the “golden dream” in spite of following the rules. However, she was still capable of assuaging some of her losses because of her hope for a better future life.

By connecting Adams’s The Epic of America and Yezierska’s The Lost Beautifulness, it is indicated that Hannah has achieved Adams’s definition of American Dreams. The first reason is that Hannah is a woman with democratic consciousness. The second reason is that Hannah is a woman of Modernism who faces Women’s Rights correctly. “Every penny I earned myself from the extra washing. But you ought to save it up for the bad times. What’ll you do when the cold weather starts in and the pushcart will not wheel itself out?” (Yezierska). From this line it is easy for us to picture the situtaions and scenes that happens in the setting. The meanings and feelings within this line are complicated. Perhaps the most important part in this line is “every penny I earned” and this is exactly a deep expression Hannah had made about Cane-her son. For his son’s life, she can give up everything she had. The third reason is that Hannah actually has her own dream. No matter what happens and how hard life is, she can keep what she is doing and believe in a better future, which reflects the faith in The Epic of America. Maybe dream also comes from love, and Hannah is a woman full of love.
